Chapter 10 - The Piano Sonata

The soft, melancholic notes of a Chopin nocturne echoed through the vaulted timber ceilings of the alpine chalet’s private study. Julian Carter sat at a gleaming Steinway grand piano, his fingers gliding effortlessly across the ivory keys, his posture immaculate despite the late hour. He wore a plush cashmere turtleneck beneath a tailored blazer, looking every bit the refined, cultured European aristocrat rather than the ruthless financial mastermind who had orchestrated a corporate assassination.

The heavy oak doors of the study clicked open with a soft, deliberate sound. Julian did not stop playing. He didn't even turn his head away from the keyboard, continuing to hammer out the intricate melody as if he had been expecting company all along.

"I must say, Elena, I am genuinely impressed," Julian spoke over the music, his voice smooth and unhurried. "Crossing the Atlantic, bypassing Swiss border security, and slipping past my perimeter guards in under an hour... your father truly taught you well."

Elena stepped out from the shadows near the towering stone fireplace, her charcoal winter coat falling open to reveal the sleek red dress underneath. Her dark eyes were locked entirely on Julian’s back, her hand resting firmly inside her beige handbag, wrapped around the grip of the suppressed pistol.

"Save the performance, Julian. The concert is over," Elena said, her voice echoing coldly in the cavernous room. She stepped forward, the heels of her boots clicking sharply against the polished hardwood floor. "The offshore accounts are frozen, your local co-conspirators are in federal custody, and this entire chalet is currently surrounded."

Julian finally lifted his hands from the piano keys, letting the final, haunting chord ring out and fade slowly into the silence of the room. He turned slowly on the piano bench, facing his niece with a serene, almost paternal smile playing on his lips.

"Surrounded? By whom, my dear? A lone federal marshal standing outside in the freezing snow?" Julian chuckled softly, standing up and smoothing the front of his blazer. He walked slowly toward the antique oak desk, where a crystal decanter of scotch and two glasses sat waiting. "Switzerland is a sovereign nation, Elena. U.S. warrants carry no weight here. And as for my security detail... well, let’s just say they take their orders exclusively from me."

Before Julian could finish his sentence, the heavy oak study doors burst open behind Elena. Three armed men in dark tactical gear rushed into the room, their assault rifles raised and aimed directly at Elena’s chest.

Elena did not panic. She didn't scream or flinch. With the cool, calculated precision she had demonstrated in the hotel lobby weeks ago, she spun on her heel, drawing the suppressed pistol from her beige handbag in one fluid motion.
