Chapter 6 - The Hidden Beneficiary

The elevator doors closed behind Arthur Sterling and the federal agents, sealing them inside the descending car and leaving Elena alone in the vast, silent penthouse with Maya Vance. The echoing click of the heavy brass doors seemed to reverberate against the glass walls long after they had vanished. Elena stood frozen near the terrace threshold, her heart skipping a beat as Arthur’s final, parting words echoed endlessly in her mind. Your father wasn't the only one who had a secret partner.
"Elena? Are you alright?" Maya asked, stepping forward with a genuine hint of concern in her voice. She slipped her federal badge into her pocket and adjusted her beige cropped blazer. "We got him. The wire transfers, the workshop logs, the audio confession—it's an airtight federal case. He'll never see the light of day again."
Elena slowly turned her head, her dark eyes wide with a sudden, creeping dread. The triumph she had felt moments ago vanished into thin air, replaced by a cold, numbing uncertainty.
"Maya, when you ran the forensic audit on the Carter Enterprises secondary accounts three weeks ago... did you find any secondary routing numbers attached to Arthur’s offshore shell companies?" Elena asked, her voice uncharacteristically shaky.
Maya frowned, her professional instincts instantly kicking back in. She pulled a small digital tablet from her beige handbag, tapping rapidly across the screen to bring up the encrypted federal database files.
"Let me check," Maya muttered, her thumb swiping across the glass display. The blue light from the tablet illuminated her face in the darkened room. She scrolled past the primary embezzlement ledgers, bypassing the domestic real estate holdings, until she reached the deep-tier Cayman Island shell corporations that Arthur had utilized.
Maya’s fingers stopped moving abruptly. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her complexion as pale as parchment. She stared at the screen in absolute silence for several long seconds.
"What is it, Maya? Talk to me," Elena urged, stepping closer and grabbing the edge of the tablet.
"There... there’s a secondary beneficiary listed on the primary holding account," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the penthouse ventilation system. "The funds weren't just going to Arthur’s personal accounts. Sixty percent of the liquidated assets were being systematically transferred to a domestic trust fund managed by a completely different entity."
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. "What entity?"
Maya looked up slowly, her eyes reflecting sheer terror. "The Carter Family Trust. Managed exclusively by your uncle, Julian Carter."
Elena stumbled backward, her heel catching the edge of the plush wool rug. Uncle Julian? That was impossible. Julian had been living in self-imposed exile in Europe for the past ten years, completely estranged from the family business after a bitter falling out with her father. He had no access to the corporate mainframes, no authority on the board, and no motive to destroy the empire his own brother had built. Or at least, that was the lie she had believed her entire life.

Before Maya could reply, the secure satellite phone resting on the marble table suddenly began to ring, flashing a high-priority red alert symbol across its small LCD screen.
