Chapter 12 - The Alpine Explosion

The shockwave of the massive explosion tore through the northern wing of the chalet, blowing out the towering floor-to-ceiling glass windows in a deafening shower of shattered crystal and splintered wood. The howling alpine wind rushed violently into the study, extinguishing the fire in the stone hearth and plunging the room into freezing chaos.
Elena was thrown sideways by the blast, crashing hard against the mahogany bookshelf, her beige handbag flying from her grip and skidding across the slippery floorboards. Maya tumbled through the open doorway, coughing violently from the thick, acrid smoke that instantly began to fill the corridors.
"Car bomb! Or an RPG strike!" Maya yelled over the roaring sound of spreading flames, pulling herself up by the edge of the doorframe and drawing her service weapon. "The perimeter has been breached! We have hostile reinforcements incoming!"
Julian Carter scrambled desperately across the floor, ignoring the chaos around him as he lunged toward a concealed steel panic room panel hidden behind the wood-paneled walls of the study. He slapped his palm against the biometric scanner, and a heavy, reinforced steel door hissed open, revealing a dark, fortified escape tunnel leading down into the heart of the mountain.
"You're not going anywhere, Julian!" Elena shouted, pushing herself up from the floor despite the searing pain in her shoulder. She ignored the falling debris and sprinted across the ruined room just as Julian lunged through the steel doorway.
Elena dove forward, sliding across the slick wooden floor just in time to grab the edge of the heavy steel door before it could snap shut. Her fingers screamed in agony as the pneumatic hydraulics engaged, trying to crush her hand against the frame. With a guttural cry of pure adrenaline, she wedged her stiletto heel into the mechanical latch, jamming the mechanism with a sharp metallic screech.
The steel door stopped moving, leaving a narrow, twelve-inch gap. Inside the panic room, Julian’s panicked face appeared in the crack, his eyes wide with madness as he tried to manually override the system from the inside.
"You can't trap me here, Elena! The whole mountain is wired to blow! If I go down, this entire estate goes up with me!" Julian screamed hysterically, his fingers frantically pounding against the inner control panel.
Elena ignored his threats. She reached blindly through the narrow gap, her hand searching frantically across the floor of the panic room until her fingers brushed against a heavy, cold leather briefcase resting on the floor. She grabbed the handle with all her might. It was Julian’s primary master ledger—the master key containing the encryption keys to every single hidden bank account across Europe and the Americas.

"Let go of the case, Elena, or I swear to God I'll detonate the secondary charge!" Julian shrieked, pressing a red tactical detonator button in his palm.
