Chapter 13 - The Descent into the Vault

The red LED light on Julian’s tactical detonator pulsed in a frantic, terrifying rhythm. Elena stared through the narrow gap of the jammed steel door, her eyes locked on her uncle’s sweating, frantic face. The roar of the burning timber above them grew louder, and thick black smoke began pouring into the escape tunnel, choking the air with the smell of scorched insulation and ash.
"Go ahead, Julian," Elena said, her voice chillingly calm as she tightened her grip on the handle of the leather briefcase. "Detonate it. Let's see who survives the burial."
Julian hesitated, his thumb hovering over the red button. He looked from the detonator to the heavy steel door, and for the first time in his life, he saw the absolute absence of fear in Elena’s eyes. She wasn't bluffing. She was entirely prepared to let the mountain bury them both to ensure he never saw freedom again.
With a curse of pure rage, Julian threw the detonator against the far wall of the panic room and lunged forward to fight for the briefcase, but Maya Vance suddenly appeared beside Elena, raising the butt of her tactical rifle and smashing it directly into the pneumatic control box of the door.
With a deafening hiss of venting pressure, the heavy steel door slammed completely shut, locking Julian securely inside his own subterranean vault with no way out.
"We need to move, now!" Maya shouted, grabbing Elena by the arm and yanking her away from the burning study. "The entire north wing is collapsing! We have less than two minutes before the whole structure comes down!"
Elena grabbed her beige handbag from the floor, slinging the leather briefcase in her other hand. Together, she and Maya sprinted through the smoke-filled corridors of the chalet, dodging falling ceiling beams and leaping over shattered glass as the structural integrity of the alpine estate disintegrated around them.
They burst through the heavy front double doors just as the entire central roof of the chalet caved in with a deafening roar, sending a towering pillar of fire shooting into the midnight sky. They threw themselves flat onto the snow-covered lawn as a shower of burning timber and red-hot embers rained down all around them.
For several long, agonizing moments, neither of them moved, listening only to the crackle of the inferno and the heavy, ragged sound of their own breathing.
Slowly, Elena pushed herself up from the snow. Her red dress was torn and stained with soot, her hair was undone from its sleek ponytail, and her hands were bruised and bleeding. But in her left hand, she held the leather briefcase, and over her shoulder hung the beige handbag.
Maya sat up, coughing into her sleeve as she looked back at the burning wreckage of the empire Julian had tried to steal.
"Is it over?" Maya whispered, wiping the soot from her forehead.
Elena looked down at the briefcase, then turned her gaze toward the dark, winding mountain road where the headlights of the local fixer’s SUV finally appeared through the fog.

"It’s over for Julian," Elena said quietly. "But for Carter Enterprises... it’s time to rebuild."
