Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Elevator

The sound of the first guard hitting the marble floor was like a gunshot in the silent hotel lobby. Maya Vance watched in sheer disbelief from her crumpled position against the wall, clutching her ribs as a second man in black lunged forward with a tactical baton. Elena Carter moved with cold, mechanical precision, ducking under the swing and driving her elbow upward into the attacker’s sternum. He collapsed instantly, gasping for air and clutching his chest.
The remaining two guards hesitated, looking at each other with sudden doubt in their eyes. They had been told that Elena was merely a corporate accountant, an easy target for a hostile corporate takeover of Carter Enterprises. None of them had been briefed on her clandestine background in international asset recovery.
Elena adjusted the strap of her beige handbag over her shoulder, her breathing steady and composed. She did not look winded in the least. The gold bracelet on her wrist chimed softly against her skin as she took a measured step toward the elevator banks.
"Now, are we finished?" Elena asked the groaning men on the floor, her voice devoid of triumph, carrying only the weight of profound exhaustion.
Maya pushed herself up from the floor, leaning heavily against the brass-trimmed wall. Her beige cropped blazer was ruined, stained with dust and a smudge of dark soot from the floor vents. She wiped the blood from her lip with the back of her hand and forced a twisted, desperate smile.
"You think this ends with the elevator, Elena?" Maya hissed, her voice trembling with a mixture of pain and adrenaline. "The board already voted. The penthouse belongs to the syndicate now. Your father’s legacy is officially liquidated."
Elena pressed the call button for the private penthouse elevator. The LED numbers above the doors began to blink, glowing a stark, blood-red in the dimming architectural lighting of the lobby. She turned her head slightly, her dark eyes locking onto Maya with a terrifying intensity.
"My father didn't build this empire with board votes, Maya. He built it with blood," Elena whispered back. "And I'm here to collect."
The heavy brass doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing a sleek, mirrored interior. Elena stepped inside the elevator car, her red dress shimmering under the halogen lights. She turned around to face the lobby, her hand resting lightly on the wall panel.

Maya watched from the floor, her eyes widening in sheer terror as Elena reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, holding it up for Maya to see before the heavy doors began to close.
