Chapter 8 - The Flight to Geneva

The private Gulfstream jet cut through the turbulent cloud cover at thirty-five thousand feet, its twin engines roaring a steady, hypnotic bass note. Inside the mahogany-paneled cabin, Elena Carter sat motionless in a leather armchair, staring blankly at the passport resting on the small folding table before her. The name inside read Elena Vance, a diplomatic cover identity secured through Marshal Maya Vance’s internal DOJ channels. There was no time to wait for the sluggish machinery of international extradition treaties. Julian Carter was liquidating the final tranches of the stolen corporate capital from a private Swiss bank in Geneva, and if she didn’t intercept him within twenty-four hours, the money would vanish forever into untraceable blockchain ledgers.
Maya sat across the aisle, tapping away at a secure tactical laptop. The screen was covered in cascading columns of encrypted financial tracking data, tracing the movement of millions of dollars from Caribbean shell companies straight into a high-security vault beneath Lake Geneva.
"We’ve confirmed his flight plan," Maya said without looking up from her screen, her voice taut with exhaustion. "Julian chartered a private Bombardier Global 7500 out of Zurich ten minutes after your satellite call ended. He’s heading straight for his private estate in the Swiss Alps, just twenty miles outside of Geneva."
Elena closed her passport with a sharp snap. She reached down to the floor, picking up her trusty beige handbag and placing it securely on her lap. Inside, alongside her tactical gear and encrypted flash drives, rested a heavy, solid-gold signet ring that had belonged to her father—the family crest that granted physical access to the underground family vault beneath Julian’s alpine chalet.
"He thinks he’s untouchable because he’s hiding behind Swiss banking secrecy laws," Elena said, her voice cold and resolute. "He forgets that the vault was built by the same architect who designed the hotel lobby."
Maya stopped typing and looked up, her brow furrowing with deep concern. "Elena, you need to understand what you’re walking into. Julian isn't Arthur. He doesn't rely on hired corporate goons. His private estate is guarded by a private paramilitary security detail composed of ex-Special Forces operatives. If you walk onto that property without federal backup, you won't survive the night."
"Federal backup won't cross Swiss territorial jurisdiction without a formal Interpol red notice, and you know as well as I do that Julian has local magistrates deeply in his pocket," Elena countered, her dark eyes locking onto Maya with unyielding determination. "This isn't a federal operation anymore, Maya. It’s personal."
Maya held her gaze for a long moment, recognizing the fierce, unbreakable resolve burning in Elena's eyes. She sighed, reaching into her jacket pocket and pulling out a heavy, suppressed tactical pistol, sliding it across the mahogany table toward Elena.
"Then don't go in alone," Maya said quietly. "My jurisdiction officially ends at the Swiss border, but my personal vacation time starts right now."
Elena looked down at the weapon, then up at Maya. A rare, appreciative smile touched the corners of Elena’s lips. She nodded slowly, picking up the pistol and sliding it effortlessly into the hidden compartment of her beige handbag.

Twenty minutes later, the captain's voice crackled over the intercom announcing their immediate descent into Geneva International Airport, where a fast-tracked black SUV was waiting on the tarmac to rush them toward the snow-capped peaks of the Alps.
