Chapter 8 - The Maiden Name

The yellowed envelope lay exposed on the cold concrete floor like a venomous snake waiting to strike. Clara stared down at her maiden name scrawled across the paper, the unfamiliar handwriting looking like a foreign language she was suddenly forced to translate.
"Pick it up, Vance," Evelyn muttered, his voice barely above a whisper, his chained hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. "Just read it and get it over with. You already have everything else."
Detective Vance ignored him, crouching down to retrieve the envelope without touching the surface directly, using the edge of his notebook to slide it open. He pulled out a folded sheet of heavy parchment paper, unfolding it carefully under the harsh glow of the halogen work lights.
Clara stepped closer, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What is that? What does my family have to do with any of this?"
Vance scanned the first few lines, his expression tightening into a grim mask. He looked up from the document, his eyes filled with a sudden, unexpected pity that made Clara’s stomach drop.
"This isn't just about financial extortion, Mrs. Evelyn," Vance said slowly, choosing his words with deliberate care. "This is a birth certificate and adoption decree dated twenty-five years ago. It names your late father as the primary executor of a disputed trust fund tied to the real estate firm your husband took over five years ago."
Clara shook her head, taking a step backward. "That’s impossible. My father was a high school history teacher. He didn't work in real estate, and he certainly didn't manage trust funds."
"Not publicly, no," Vance replied, turning the parchment slightly so she could see the signature at the bottom. "He was the silent financial auditor for the original development corporation—the one your husband's family inherited. And according to these records, your father didn't die of a heart attack twenty years ago."
The air in the subterranean room seemed to vanish entirely. Clara grabbed the edge of the steel desk to steady herself, her knuckles turning white.
"What are you saying?" Clara breathed, her voice cracking under the weight of the implication.
"I'm saying your father discovered that the original founders of this real estate empire built their entire fortune on systematic land fraud and embezzlement," Vance explained, pointing to a highlighted paragraph in the document. "And when he tried to blow the whistle, he was forced into signing a lifetime non-disclosure agreement—or face criminal charges that would have ruined your family."
Margaret, who had slipped down the stairs behind them and listened quietly from the doorway, let out a sharp, ragged gasp. She clutched the doorframe for support, her face turning ashen as the sins of her own family’s past came crashing down around her.
"My husband... Arthur knew about this?" Margaret whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Is that why he handed the company over to Evelyn so easily?"
Evelyn finally raised his head, a bitter, broken smile twisting the corners of his mouth. He looked directly at his mother, his eyes dark with resentment.
"He didn't hand it over, Mother. He buried it," Evelyn snapped, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Just like I buried the truth about why we bought this exact house. It was never about a fresh start. It was about finishing what your precious husband started twenty years ago."

Before anyone could demand an explanation for his cryptic words, the secure Wi-Fi router sitting on the central server rack suddenly blinked red, and a loud, automated alarm began to wail throughout the hidden room, signaling a remote data wipe initiated from an external source.
