Chapter 2 - The Silent Witness

The sudden drop in temperature within the grand foyer was palpable. Evelyn’s jaw remained locked, but a flicker of genuine hesitation crossed his eyes before his arrogance quickly rebuilt the wall. He scoffed, crossing his arms over his black tuxedo vest as if trying to physically contain his mounting defensive rage.

"The CCTV? What does a security camera have to do with this blatant lack of honesty?" Evelyn demanded, his voice defensive yet laced with a nervous tremor he tried desperately to mask.

Clara didn't flinch. She kept her arms securely wrapped around Lily, whose breathing was slowly steadying against her collarbone. Margaret frowned, looking between her son and her daughter-in-law, sensing that a deeper, more dangerous truth was about to be dragged out into the open air.

"It records everything, Evelyn," Clara said slowly, enunciating each word with chilling clarity. "Every movement. Every visitor. Every lie told under this roof while you were busy trying to construct a narrative that protects your fragile ego."

"You're deflecting," Evelyn snapped, stepping closer, though he kept his distance from the broken glass. "The heirloom diamond brooch was missing from my study desk drawer. Lily’s room is right down the hall. The math isn't difficult."

"Mathematics requires actual data, not biased assumptions," Margaret interjected sharply, stepping between them. She cast a cool, analytical glance at her son. "Evelyn, if the system was recording, let us simply look at the footage before you brand your own child a criminal to the entire household."

Evelyn’s face drained of color, his chest rising and falling heavily beneath the expensive fabric of his shirt. He looked away, his gaze darting toward the hallway leading to his private office.

"The server is down for maintenance," Evelyn lied, his voice pitching just a fraction higher than normal. "It hasn't been recording since Tuesday."

Clara stood up slowly, gently setting Lily behind her out of harm's way. She stared at her husband with a look of profound betrayal.

"Maintenance?" Clara asked quietly, stepping right up to him. "I checked the system dashboard this morning. It was fully operational, recording in high definition, capturing every single soul who entered that hallway."

The silence that followed was suffocating. Evelyn opened his mouth to formulate another excuse, but a sharp, rhythmic beep echoed from his breast pocket. His phone vibrated violently, demanding his attention. With trembling fingers, he pulled the device out and glanced at the glowing screen. His breath hitched completely, the color draining entirely from his face as he read the incoming notification.
