Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The heavy mahogany frame lay in jagged, dangerous pieces across the high-gloss walnut flooring, its protective glass sparkling under the unforgiving glare of the chandelier. Lily stood frozen in her pristine white dress and matching white shoes, her small frame trembling violently as silent tears tracked down her flushed cheeks. She clutched a torn photograph to her chest like a shield against the fury erupting around her.

Evelyn towered over her, his black tuxedo jacket unbuttoned in a surge of righteous indignation. His face was a mask of cold fury, veins bulging slightly at his temples as he thrust a rigid finger downward toward the terrified child.

"That's what happens when you raise a thief!" Evelyn shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings of the foyer with brutal intensity.

"I didn't take it, mommy!" Lily sobbed, her small voice cracking with absolute desperation as she looked up for rescue.

Clara dropped instantly to her knees on the hard floor, ignoring the sharp glass shards that threatened to pierce her green dress. She wrapped her arms tightly around her daughter, pulling the trembling child against her chest and glaring up at her husband.

"Don't you dare speak to her that way, Evelyn! She is seven years old!" Clara cried out, her protective instincts overriding the shock of the sudden confrontation.

Before Evelyn could fire back another cruel accusation, heavy footsteps clicked against the wood. Margaret pushed herself forward, her blue dress rustling with agitated authority, a strand of expensive pearls bouncing against her stern chest. She pointed a manicured finger directly at her son's face, her expression a mix of disgust and exhaustion.

"Evelyn, stop making a scene!" Margaret snapped, her tone cutting through the toxic air like a knife.

Clara looked away from the family squabble for a split second, her eyes catching the small, dome-shaped housing nestled in the far corner of the ceiling. The green operational light of the overhead security camera blinked steadily in the dimming light. A strange realization washed over her pale features, cooling her frantic panic into a terrifying stillness. She turned her head back toward her husband, her eyes locking onto his with a dark, heavy warning.

"You really should have checked the CCTV," Clara whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling, dead level that made Evelyn instantly pause.
