Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

The melodic chime of the doorbell vibrated through the silent foyer, feeling less like a greeting and more like a summons from an executioner. Everyone froze. The damning video still looped silently on the phone screen in Clara’s hand, the digital timestamp mocking the fragile domestic peace they had pretended to maintain for years.

"Ignore it," Evelyn muttered, his voice strained as he pushed himself off the wall. He reached out with a desperate, shaking hand to reclaim the phone. "Clara, give me the phone. We can talk about this. Privately. Without dragging outsiders into our personal business."

Clara stepped back, holding the device safely behind her back. Her eyes burned with a fierce, protective wrath. "Personal business? You framed a seven-year-old child, Evelyn. You used our daughter as a pawn in whatever sick game you're playing. You aren't closing this door to anyone."

The doorbell chimed again, longer and more insistent this time.

Margaret straightened her posture, smoothing the front of her blue dress with an instinctive gesture of dignity. She looked at her son with absolute disdain, the maternal warmth in her eyes completely extinguished.

"Open the door, Clara," Margaret instructed firmly, her voice carrying the undeniable weight of matriarchal command. "Let whoever is out there see what kind of monster my son has become under this roof."

Before Clara could move toward the massive oak door, the heavy brass handle began to turn from the outside. The lock clicked, and the heavy panel swung inward, revealing a tall man in a dark trench coat standing on the porch. Rain misted around his broad shoulders under the glare of the porch light. It was Detective Vance from the local precinct, holding a leather notebook in one hand and an official warrant in the other.

Detective Vance stepped across the threshold, his sharp eyes instantly taking in the broken glass on the floor, the crying child behind her mother, and the tense, hostile postures of the adults.

"Good evening," Detective Vance said, his voice deep and entirely devoid of warmth. "I apologize for the late hour, but we received an anonymous digital tip regarding a missing asset tied to a corporate embezzlement investigation linked to this address."

Evelyn flinched violently, taking a half-step backward toward the hallway leading to the back of the house. His face turned an ash-gray color, matching the misty rain outside.

"An investigation?" Clara repeated, her heart pounding against her ribs as she connected the dots that Evelyn had tried so desperately to hide.

"Yes, Mrs. Vance—excuse me, Mrs. Evelyn," the detective corrected himself smoothly, stepping further into the foyer. He pulled out a folded document and locked his gaze directly onto Evelyn. "Evelyn, you are being named as the primary suspect in the transfer of three million dollars in unauthorized offshore accounts. We have reason to believe the missing diamond brooch isn't just family jewelry—it's a physical key containing an encrypted cold-storage wallet."
