Chapter 3 - The Glowing Screen

Evelyn stared at the illuminated display in his hand, his thumb hovering over the screen as if touching it might detonate a bomb. The ambient light from the chandelier caught the sudden sheen of sweat forming along his hairline.

"Who is it?" Margaret demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy tension like a whip. "Show me that screen right now, Evelyn."

Evelyn instinctively pulled the phone away, tucking it against his chest in a defensive crouch. "It's nothing. Just a work emergency. The market in Tokyo is crashing, and my partners are losing their minds."

"At two in the morning?" Clara challenged, her eyes narrowing as she stepped closer. "Your firm doesn't trade in Tokyo, Evelyn. You handle domestic real estate acquisitions. Stop lying."

Lily peeked out from behind Clara’s green dress, clutching the edge of the fabric with white-knuckled grip. Her young eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and confusion, watching the adults tear apart the reality she had trusted all her life.

Margaret didn't wait for permission. With a surprising burst of speed for her age, the elderly woman lunged forward, swiping the phone directly from her son's loosening grip. Evelyn cursed loudly, lunging after her, but Margaret held the device high out of reach, adjusting her reading glasses with her free hand.

The screen was locked on a playback interface. A live thumbnail showed the interior of Evelyn’s private study, timestamped just twenty minutes prior to the family confrontation in the foyer. Margaret’s breath caught in her throat as she stared at the high-resolution footage playing out in the palm of her hand.

"What in God's name is this?" Margaret whispered, her voice trembling not with anger, but with profound shock.

On the tiny screen, a figure dressed identically to Evelyn was kneeling by the mahogany desk. But the figure wasn't searching for a lost item; he was carefully sliding the heavy diamond brooch out of his own pocket and dropping it neatly into the small wicker basket sitting on Lily’s craft table out in the hallway, framing the child before staging the entire angry confrontation.

Clara reached out and gently took the phone from Margaret’s trembling hand, watching the damning loop play out frame by frame. The silence in the foyer became absolute, broken only by the steady, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.

Clara slowly raised her eyes from the screen, fixing a gaze of pure ice on her husband.

"You planted it," Clara said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "You planted the brooch in our daughter's basket."

Evelyn backed away until his shoulders hit the paneled wall. He looked at his mother, then at his wife, and finally down at Lily. He opened his mouth to speak, but the front doorbell suddenly chimed, breaking the spell with a jarring, mechanical melody.
