Chapter 5 - The Encrypted Key

The word cold-storage hung in the damp air of the foyer, heavy and dense enough to suffocate everyone present. Lily buried her face deeper into Clara’s green dress, sensing the terrifying shift in the adults' energy, even if the financial terminology meant nothing to her young mind.
Detective Vance stepped closer, his heavy leather shoes crunching softly on the scattered glass shards. He didn't break eye contact with Evelyn, who now looked trapped like an animal cornered in a steel cage.
"What are you talking about, Detective?" Margaret asked, her voice tight with disbelief as she clutched her pearl necklace. "My son is a real estate developer. He works with bricks and mortar, not offshore accounts."
"Real estate makes for an exceptional shell corporation, Mrs. Margaret," Vance replied evenly, never blinking. "Especially when properties are bought and sold using encrypted digital assets instead of traditional fiat currency. The missing brooch isn't an heirloom. It’s a custom-machined USB drive disguised as vintage costume jewelry, commissioned specifically to bypass airport security scanners."
Clara’s mind raced backward, connecting months of late-night phone calls, locked desk drawers, and sudden defensive outbursts. She looked down at the phone still clutched in her hand, where the CCTV footage of Evelyn planting the fake item was paused. The entire setup wasn't just about punishing a child; it was a desperate attempt to hide the physical key in plain sight—or better yet, to have it found in Lily’s possession if the authorities searched the house, pinning a federal crime on an innocent minor to create a legal smokescreen.
"You were going to blame her for the financial crimes," Clara whispered, the horror of the realization paralyzing her vocal cords. "If the police raided the house, you were going to claim the child accidentally found the key and hid it in her basket, making it look like a tragic misunderstanding."
Evelyn’s eyes darted toward the front door, calculating the distance, the weather, and the physical presence of the detective blocking his only escape route. His muscles tensed under the black tuxedo jacket, ready to bolt.
"Don't even think about it, Evelyn," Vance warned calmly, resting his hand casually near the tactical belt at his hip. "The perimeter of this property was secured ten minutes before I knocked. Federal marshals are watching every exit."
Margaret let out a sharp gasp, her hand flying to cover her mouth. She stared at her son, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical blow. "You coward. You absolute coward."
Evelyn’s chest heaved. With a sudden, explosive motion, he lunged sideways, not toward the door, but toward the grand staircase, intending to reach the study upstairs where the primary server and backup hard drives were located before the detective could secure them.
"Stop him!" Clara screamed, lunging forward despite the glass beneath her feet.

Detective Vance reacted instantly, but before he could clear the distance, Evelyn slammed his shoulder into the antique hallway table, sending a heavy ceramic vase crashing down directly into their path, shattering the wood and blocking the chase.
