Chapter 6 - The Staircase Blockade

The ceramic vase exploded into a thousand dusty pieces across the hardwood floor, sending heavy splinters flying in all directions. Evelyn didn't look back. His dress shoes slipped slightly on the polished wood as he scrambled up the first three steps of the grand staircase, his hands gripping the mahogany banister for leverage.
"Evelyn, stop right there! Federal warrant!" Detective Vance shouted, vaulting over the debris of the broken table with athletic precision.
Margaret grabbed Lily by the shoulders, pulling the sobbing girl away from the danger zone and pressing her tightly against the living room wall. Clara stood frozen, watching her husband flee up the stairs like a hunted criminal, realizing with stark finality that the man she had shared a bed with for a decade was a complete stranger.
Evelyn reached the second-floor landing, his breathing ragged and echoing loudly in the high-ceilinged hallway. He spun around, his eyes wild and desperate, scanning the upper level for a weapon or a secondary exit. His gaze locked onto the heavy decorative fire axe mounted inside a glass display case on the wall—an archaic artifact from the house's historical renovation.
"Don't come another step closer!" Evelyn yelled, his voice cracking into a manic shriek as he slammed his elbow into the glass display case, shattering the protective pane with a loud, metallic crash.
Detective Vance paused on the middle of the staircase, keeping his hand close to his belt. He assessed the unstable situation with cold, practiced professionalism.
"Evelyn, breaking a federal marshal's containment and destroying evidence adds ten mandatory years to your sentence," Vance warned, his voice steady and hypnotic. "Put the axe down. It's over. The digital ledger has already been mirrored to our cloud servers in real-time."
Evelyn froze, the heavy steel head of the axe hovering in his grip. The color vanished entirely from his face. "Mirrored? What do you mean mirrored?"
"I mean your offshore transactions were flagged by automated Treasury algorithms six hours ago," Vance explained calmly, taking another slow step up the stairs. "Every transfer, every encrypted wallet, every communication with your co-conspirators was downloaded by federal agents before you even woke up this morning. You were walking into a trap of your own making."
Down in the foyer, Clara heard every word. A strange wave of calm washed over her. She gently comforted Lily, who was still trembling. Margaret stood nearby, staring up at her son with a face carved from stone.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the front of the house rattled violently. Before anyone could react, the door burst open, and two additional federal agents in tactical gear poured into the foyer, securing the lower level and cutting off any hope of retreat.
Evelyn looked down at the agents below, then at Detective Vance closing in on the landing, and finally at the axe in his shaking hands. The fight completely drained out of him. He dropped the heavy steel weapon, letting it clang loudly against the hardwood floor.
He raised his hands slowly, his head dropping in defeat.
"Cuff him," Margaret commanded from below, her voice cold as ice.

As Vance clicked the steel cuffs into place around Evelyn’s wrists, the detective’s radio crackled to life with a burst of static, broadcasting an urgent message from the forensic team searching the basement.
