Chapter 12 - The Garden Gate

The brilliant glare of the motion sensor floodlights washed over the stone patio, turning the misty night air into a shimmering wall of white. Clara slammed to a halt, yumping Lily back against the glass pane of the French doors to shield the trembling child from the immediate line of sight.
The three figures standing by the garden gate didn't rush forward. They moved with slow, calculated precision, their dark clothing blending seamlessly into the shadowy perimeter of the overgrown hedges. The man in the center—taller than the others, wearing a worn leather jacket over a tactical vest—slowly pulled down a black neck gaiter, revealing a scarred, impassive face that Clara recognized instantly from the background of an old photograph in Evelyn’s secret ledger.
"Victor Vance... excuse me, Viktor," Clara corrected herself, remembering the alias from the file. "You're not a federal marshal."
The man chuckled—a dry, humorless sound that lacked any warmth. "Detective Vance is currently driving your husband downtown in a secure transport vehicle, Mrs. Evelyn. A real marshal would never leave a perimeter unsecured while a high-value asset remains in play. You should have checked his badge a little closer."
Clara’s stomach plummeted into an abyss of absolute horror. The man who had entered the foyer earlier, the one who had taken Evelyn away—he wasn't law enforcement at all. He was part of the very syndicate her husband had been trying to outrun, orchestrating a clever inside extraction disguised as a federal arrest to seize control of the encrypted network from both ends.
"You staged the whole thing," Clara whispered, her grip tightening around the flash drive in her pocket until her knuckles turned ghostly white.
"We simply accelerated the inevitable," Viktor replied smoothly, taking two measured steps onto the stone patio. He gestured toward her pocket with a gloved hand. "Now, be a sensible mother and hand over the drive. Your husband made his bed by trying to double-cross our syndicate, but there is no reason your daughter has to pay the price for his professional stupidity."
"Never," Clara spat back, her protective instincts overriding the paralyzing fear. She looked wildly around the patio for an alternate route of escape, but the brick walls of the estate were too high to scale in the dark with a child.
Inside the living room behind them, the heavy thuds of the struggle had suddenly ceased, replaced by an agonizing, terrifying silence.
"Margaret!" Clara screamed toward the dark interior of the house, her voice cracking with pure panic. There was no answer.
Viktor sighed, a look of mild irritation crossing his scarred face. He nodded to the two men flanking him, who began to fan out across the patio, closing the circle.
"You're forcing our hand, Mrs. Evelyn," Viktor said coldly, drawing a heavy tactical knife from his belt with a slow, deliberate click. "Last chance. Give me the drive."
Clara took a desperate step backward, her heel catching the edge of the iron planter box. She stumbled, nearly losing her balance, but as she fell back against the exterior wall, her hand brushed against an old, rusted metal handle embedded in the stone pavers near the base of the foundation—an emergency cellar access door that neither Evelyn nor the syndicate knew existed.
Without hesitation, Clara yanked the heavy iron ring upward. The rusty latch gave way with a loud, metallic shriek, revealing a dark, steep stone staircase leading down into the pitch-black earth beneath the garden.

Before Viktor could lunge forward to grab her, Clara pulled Lily down into the dark opening, slamming the heavy iron door shut above them just as the syndicate members lunged across the patio.
