Chapter 9 - The Digital Trap

The screen of Maya’s laptop flashed furiously as the download progress bar hit ninety-eight percent. Come on, finish, she chanted silently in her head, her fingers hovering over the escape key as the sound of heavy footsteps echoed closer along the concrete floor outside the chain-link partition.
"Check the server racks in sector four," Elena’s cold, authoritative voice cut through the cavernous space, sending a shiver down Maya’s spine. "Julian says she was tracing our IP traffic earlier this morning. If she accesses the core database, the entire scheme unravels before the afternoon audit goes public."
The download bar hit one hundred percent. A small dialog box popped up: Transfer Complete. 4.2 Terabytes Saved.
Maya yanked the Ethernet cable from the port, grabbed her laptop, and shoved it haphazardly into her canvas backpack. She spun around to exit the chain-link enclosure, but froze when she saw Julian’s silhouette rounding the corner of the filing cabinets less than twenty feet away, sweeping the beam of a heavy tactical flashlight across the floor.
She ducked low behind a massive stack of crated server components, holding her breath and pressing her back against the cold metal casing. Her black trash bag scraped softly against a protruding bolt, making a tiny scratching noise in the quiet room.
"Did you hear that?" Julian’s voice stopped just on the other side of the stack.
Maya closed her eyes, clutching her backpack straps so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"You're jumping at shadows, Julian," Elena’s voice called out from further down the aisle. "The girl is a panicked teenager hiding in some diner downtown, not an elite operative infiltrating our secure facility. Focus on wiping the primary transaction logs before Arthur’s bank managers arrive at the firm."
The footsteps paused, then slowly began to recede as Julian muttered something unintelligible and walked away toward the front office.
Maya let out a long, shaky exhale. She waited another full minute to ensure they were out of earshot, then crept out from behind the crates and sprinted toward the rear emergency exit leading out onto the loading docks overlooking the harbor.
She pushed the heavy push-bar on the metal door. It swung open, flooding the dark interior with bright, glaring daylight and the smell of salt water. She stepped out onto the wooden platform of the loading dock, preparing to climb down the ladder to the water level where Silas said a small skiff was moored.
As she reached for the ladder, a heavy hand grabbed the back of her grey zip-up hoodie, jerking her backward with crushing force.
Maya stumbled, losing her footing, and crashed hard onto the splintered wood of the loading dock. She looked up, gasping for breath, to see Julian standing over her with a cold, triumphant smirk plastered across his face.

"Got you," Julian sneered, raising his phone to call Elena over.
