Chapter 4 - The Midnight Intruder

Maya pressed her back against the cool cedar siding of the house, holding her breath as she stared up at her second-story bedroom window. The pale yellow glow of a desk lamp illuminated the sheer curtains, casting moving silhouettes against the glass. Someone was inside her room at three in the morning, and judging by the frantic pacing of the shadow, they were searching for something specific.
She crept carefully across the dew-soaked lawn, avoiding the squeaky wooden patio steps, and made her way toward the old wooden trellis that climbed up to the roof outside her window. The lattice groaned slightly under her weight as she pulled herself upward, her fingers gripping the rough painted wood with desperate strength. She reached the roofline, scrambled silently over the gutter, and crouched beneath the windowsill, peering through a small gap in the curtains.
Inside, Julian was tearing through her art supplies, dumping tubes of acrylic paint and charcoal sketches onto the floor in a frantic search. His black jacket was discarded on her unmade bed, and lying beside it was a sleek, silver laptop that definitely did not belong to her. It was her father’s encrypted work computer—the very device containing the master keys to the firm’s financial database.
Elena stood by the bedroom door, arms crossed in her signature posture, watching Julian with a look of cold impatience.
"Stop making such a mess, Julian," Elena snapped in a low, sharp hiss that carried clearly through the glass. "Just find the external hard drive where Arthur backs up his personal journal. If he reads what we wrote in that digital ledger before the audit hits tomorrow morning, we're finished."
"I'm looking as fast as I can!" Julian muttered back, kicking a box of old photographs across the room. "The kid must have hidden it somewhere clever. She was always obsessed with her stupid cameras and darkroom equipment."
Outside in the cold night air, Maya felt a wave of absolute fury wash over her exhaustion. They weren't just framing her; they were systematically looting her father’s life work while manipulating him into believing she was the thief. And the external hard drive they were frantically searching for wasn't hidden in her room at all—it was taped securely to the underside of the basement workbench, right beneath her father’s old tool chest.
She needed to retrieve that hard drive before they tore her bedroom apart and found nothing, prompting them to expand their search downstairs. But as she began to back away from the window to make her way down to the basement bulkhead, her foot snagged on a loose shingle, sending a small cascade of gravel clattering down against the patio below.
Inside the bedroom, the frantic rustling stopped instantly. A heavy silence fell over the room, followed by the slow, deliberate squeak of floorboards approaching the window.

Maya froze, paralyzed in the dark, as the curtains parted and Julian’s cold eyes locked directly onto hers through the glass.
