Chapter 5 - Caught in the Crosshairs

The glass pane separated them by mere inches, but the look in Julian’s eyes made the winter air feel positively scorching. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. Julian’s expression shifted from startled surprise to a predatory grin, his hand reaching out to push the window sash upward with a smooth, silent motion.

"Well, look who decided to come back for an encore," Julian whispered mockingly, the night wind carrying his words straight to Maya’s ears.

Panic surged through Maya’s veins. She didn't wait to see if he would climb out after her. She scrambled backward on hands and knees across the sloped roof, grabbing the edge of the gutter and swinging her legs over toward the wooden trellis. Her sneakers found the rungs just as Julian’s hands grabbed empty air where she had been crouching a second earlier.

"Hey! She's on the roof!" Julian shouted back into the bedroom, his voice cutting through the quiet suburban night.

Maya slid down the trellis, ignoring the splinters digging into her palms, and dropped the final six feet onto the soft mulch of the garden bed below. She hit the ground rolling, grabbing her canvas backpack and trash bag from where she had tucked them behind the air conditioning unit, and bolted toward the wooden side gate.

As she burst through the gate onto the sidewalk, the front door of the house flew open. Arthur stood on the porch in his plaid bathrobe, his hair disheveled and his expression a chaotic storm of confusion and rage as Julian rushed out behind him, pointing wildly down the street.

"Arthur! She was breaking in through the bedroom window!" Julian yelled, putting on a masterful performance of righteous alarm. "She’s stealing your research files!"

Arthur stepped down onto the driveway, his voice cracking with fury as he bellowed into the darkness. "Maya! Get back here right now, you little thief!"

Maya didn't look back. She sprinted down the dark street, her lungs burning with every breath, her heavy boots pounding against the pavement. She turned the corner into a commercial alleyway, ducking behind a row of large metal commercial dumpsters just as the headlights of her father’s sedan swept across the brick walls of the alley. The car slowed, idling near the entrance of the alley as Arthur and Julian scanned the shadows for any sign of her.

Crouching in the freezing dirt behind the dumpster, Maya pulled her knees to her chest and tried to quiet her ragged breathing. Her father was actively hunting her down, entirely convinced she was his enemy. The realization brought a fresh wave of grief, heavier and colder than the night air.

As the sedan finally reversed and drove away, the beam of a passing flashlight swept across the brick wall directly above Maya’s hiding spot, revealing a freshly spray-painted symbol she had never noticed before—the exact corporate logo of Arthur’s architectural firm, marked with a jagged red slash.
