Chapter 6 - The Symbol on the Wall

The jagged red slash across the corporate logo painted on the damp brick wall seemed to pulse under the harsh yellow beam of the passing flashlight. Maya stared at the mark, her heart hammering against her ribs. It wasn't random graffiti; it was a professional stencil, clean-edged and deliberate. She had seen that exact red slash once before—briefly glimpsed on the corner of a confidential document left open on her father’s home office desk two weeks ago, right before Elena and Julian had moved into the house.
The conspiracy went much deeper than a simple domestic manipulation or a localized financial scam. The firm was being targeted by an external corporate raiding syndicate, and Elena was not just a manipulative romantic partner—she was the operational lead of the hostile takeover group. Julian was likely her tech specialist, handling the digital infiltration while Elena managed the psychological demolition of Arthur’s personal life to ensure he had no emotional support system when the hammer dropped.
Maya pulled her phone out, turning the brightness down to the lowest setting to preserve the battery. She opened her camera app and snapped a quick, silent photo of the spray-painted wall, capturing the symbol alongside the unique serial number stamped on the metal electrical box beside it. If she could trace the electrical box registration through municipal records, she might find the physical headquarters of the syndicate before the morning audit ruined her father entirely.
Shivering violently from the damp cold, Maya dug through her canvas backpack, her fingers brushing past sketchbooks and film canisters until they wrapped around a thick, woolen scarf her grandmother had knitted her years ago. She wrapped it tightly around her neck, letting the familiar scent of lavender and old cedar ground her racing thoughts.
She needed a safe place to work on her digital investigation—somewhere with free Wi-Fi and anonymity. The municipal library wouldn't open for another four hours, but the lobby of the downtown bus terminal operated twenty-four hours a day, frequented by travelers, shift workers, and people invisible to the rest of society.
Slinging the heavy backpack over her shoulders and clutching her black trash bag, Maya navigated the back alleys until she reached the main thoroughfare. The city was beginning to stir with the earliest hints of dawn, a bruised purple bruised sky bleeding over the skyline of downtown skyscrapers.
When she reached the bus terminal, the fluorescent lights inside hummed with a sterile, antiseptic brightness. She bought a cheap cup of vending machine tea, claimed a metal chair near an electrical outlet, and pulled her laptop from her bag, booting it up under the cover of a thick math textbook propped open on the small laminate table.
She bypassed her home network connection, routing her traffic through a secure proxy, and began cross-referencing the electrical box serial number with public utility databases. Within twenty minutes, a residential address popped up on her screen—an abandoned industrial warehouse located down by the old shipping yards on Pier 4.
Maya clicked on the property registry details, her breath catching in her throat as she read the name of the current legal owner listed on the deed: Elena Vance.

Before she could dig into the financial encumbrances of the warehouse property, a heavy hand dropped squarely onto her shoulder from behind.
