Chapter 12 - The Betrayal in Blue

The weight of the plastic bag containing the stolen cash felt heavier than any physical anchor as Detective Miller dropped it onto a wooden crate beside him. Maya stood frozen, her mind spinning wildly as she tried to process how the evidence had been switched right under her nose. The digital drive containing the true transaction logs was still inside the hidden side pocket of her backpack, buried beneath her sketchbooks, but the planted cash gave the police all the probable cause they needed to lock her away indefinitely.

"You planted that," Maya whispered, her voice shaking with raw fury as she glared directly at Elena, who stood watching with her arms crossed in that familiar, triumphant posture. "You switched the bags while Julian was holding me down on the loading dock!"

Detective Miller stepped between them, his expression severe and unyielding. "That's enough, young lady. Accusations without proof won't help your case. You were found trespassing in a restricted industrial warehouse in possession of nearly fifty thousand dollars in missing corporate funds. I’m placing you under arrest for grand larceny and breaking and entering."

The cold steel of handcuffs snapped around Maya’s wrists as Detective Miller removed the nylon ropes and replaced them with standard police issue restraints. The metallic click was chillingly reminiscent of the deadbolt sliding home on her front door less than twenty-four hours ago. Every single authority figure she had trusted or hoped would rescue her had been systematically neutralized or co-opted by Elena’s vast, invisible syndicate.

As the two uniform officers led her toward the waiting patrol car, she looked back one last time. Elena and Julian were standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the doorway of the warehouse, watching her departure with cold, calculated satisfaction. Silas’s battered pickup truck was nowhere to be seen; whether the old man had been scared off or intercepted by their operatives, Maya had no way of knowing.

She was placed in the back seat of the cruiser, the heavy wire mesh partition separating her from the front seats feeling like a cage designed to bury the truth forever. The cruiser’s engine revbed, and the car pulled away from Pier 4, heading inland toward the county precinct downtown.

As they drove through the desolate industrial district, Maya used her cuffed hands to secretly reach into the side pocket of her canvas backpack resting on the seat beside her. Her fingers brushed against the cold metal casing of her hidden flash drive—the only piece of untainted evidence remaining in her possession.

She needed to get that flash drive into the hands of someone outside the local jurisdiction before they reached the precinct and booked her into the main holding facility where Elena’s reach undoubtedly extended.

Just as the cruiser turned onto the main highway leading toward the downtown precinct, the radio on the dashboard crackled to life with an urgent dispatch call regarding an unexpected visitor waiting at the station for them.
