Chapter 3 - The Coffee Shop Revelation

The flickering television screen above the diner counter cast a sickly blue glow over Maya’s face as the news anchor’s voice droned on about corporate financial discrepancies. Maya stared at the screen, her coffee untouched as the anchor displayed a photograph of Arthur’s architectural firm downtown. According to the news report, over two hundred thousand dollars had been systematically siphoned from the company’s escrow accounts over the past six months. The primary signature authorizing those transfers belonged to the managing partner—Arthur himself.

Maya’s breath hitched in her throat. The pieces of the puzzle began clicking together with terrifying clarity. Elena and Julian had not merely moved into her house to play domestic partners; they were professional con artists executing a meticulously planned corporate frame-up. They needed a scapegoat within the household to distract from the digital footprint of the financial crime, and Maya, with her teenage moodiness and occasional arguments with her father, had been the convenient patsy.

She pulled her phone from her hoodie pocket, unlocking the screen with trembling thumbs. She needed to call her uncle Robert, her father’s estranged younger brother who lived across state lines and had always warned Arthur about associating with predatory opportunists. But when she dialed the number, it went straight to a disconnected carrier message. A cold knot twisted in her stomach. Robert’s phone had been active just last week.

"Everything okay, kiddo?" Brenda asked, returning with a plate of scrambled eggs and toast that Maya hadn't ordered. The waitress set it down gently, sliding it across the table with a sympathetic smile. "On the house. You look like you haven't eaten a square meal in days."

"Thank you," Maya said, her voice shaking. "I... I think my family is in terrible danger."

"Family trouble is the hardest kind to fix," Brenda said, wiping her hands on her apron. "My sister tried to ruin me over our mother's estate ten years ago. People get greedy, honey. When money is involved, blood turns to water real fast."

Maya nodded slowly, chewing a bite of toast mechanically. She realized she could not go to the police yet. If Elena and Julian had forged her father’s signature on the asset transfer and manipulated the corporate accounts using her home IP address—which she suddenly remembered Julian tinkering with on her laptop last Tuesday—the digital evidence would point directly to her. She needed hard proof, physical evidence left behind in her bedroom, before anyone would believe a displaced teenager over an established businessman and his sophisticated new companions.

She checked her watch. It was 3:15 AM. The neighborhood would be pitch dark, and her father’s house would be fast asleep. It was the only window of opportunity she would get.

Maya slid out of the vinyl booth, leaving a ten-dollar bill on the table, and grabbed her trash bag and backpack. Pushing open the diner door, she stepped back into the freezing night, determined to break back into her own home.

She crept around the side of the house, slipping into the shadows of the backyard, only to freeze when she saw a bright light shining from her bedroom window.
