Chapter 10 - The Waterfront Confrontation

The rough splintered wood of the loading dock pressed hard against Maya’s cheek as Julian pinned her shoulder to the ground with a heavy, boot-clad foot. She gritted her teeth against the pain, her fingers digging into the gaps between the planks as she searched desperately for anything she could use as leverage.

"Let me go!" Maya screamed, twisting her body in a violent, desperate attempt to break free.

"Save your breath, kid," Julian mocked, pressing down harder with his boot, cutting off her air supply for a agonizing second. "You've been a thorn in our side for weeks, but running down to the docks was a rookie mistake. Elena is going to be so pleased we wrapped this up before noon."

Heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed across the platform behind Julian. Elena stepped into Maya’s field of vision, her brown leather jacket catching the harsh midday sun as she adjusted the cuffs of her sleeves with deliberate slowness. She looked down at Maya not with anger, but with the detached, clinical curiosity of a scientist observing a lab specimen.

"I told you she was resourceful, Julian," Elena said smoothly, her voice devoid of any warmth. "She inherited Arthur’s stubborn streak. Unfortunately, stubbornness without capital or leverage is just suicide."

Elena crouched down beside Maya, her dark eyes narrowing as she reached out and grabbed the strap of Maya’s canvas backpack, yanking it off her shoulder with a sharp tug.

"Give that back!" Maya snarled, lashing out with her foot and catching Julian sharply in the shin.

Julian cursed, stumbling backward and releasing his foot from her shoulder. Maya scrambled upward, throwing herself toward the edge of the loading dock, but Elena was too fast. Elena grabbed a length of heavy nylon rope coiled near a storage crate and looped it around Maya’s wrists with practiced efficiency, binding her arms securely behind her back before she could reach the ladder.

"You're not going anywhere, Maya," Elena whispered, leaning in close so only Maya could hear her words. "Your father has already signed the final dissolution papers at the firm. By sunset, you won't just be homeless—you'll be an accessory to grand larceny, wanted by federal authorities across three states."

Maya stared at Elena, her eyes burning with fierce defiance despite the ropes cutting painfully into her wrists. "My dad will never believe you once he sees what I downloaded from your servers. I have every transaction log, every forged signature, and every shell company registration."

Elena’s cold smirk flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, dangerous glint in her eyes. She stood up slowly, turning to Julian with a sharp nod.

"Bring her inside the office," Elena commanded coldly. "And prepare the digital uplink. We're going to send Arthur a little video message from his daughter to ensure he signs the final surrender documents without asking any more questions."

As Julian grabbed Maya by the arm and hoisted her roughly to her feet, the distant wail of police sirens began echoing across the harbor waters, growing louder with every passing second.
