Chapter 11 - Sirens Across the Harbor

The wail of the approaching sirens bounced off the corrugated tin walls of the warehouse, cutting sharply through the salt-heavy air. Julian froze mid-step, his grip on Maya’s arm tightening instinctively as his head whipped around toward the access road leading down to Pier 4.
Elena’s face drained of color, her calm exterior cracking for the first time since the morning began. "Who called the police?" she snapped, glaring accusingly at Julian. "Did you leave a digital trail open on the main terminal?"
"No! I wiped everything according to protocol!" Julian protested, his voice rising in panic as flashing red and blue lights began to paint the gray fog outside with frantic neon streaks.
Maya seized the moment of distraction. She threw all her weight backward, slamming her shoulder squarely into Julian’s chest. Taken completely by surprise, Julian stumbled backward, losing his balance and tripping over a coil of heavy mooring rope. He hit the wooden decking with a loud grunt, releasing his grip on Maya’s arm entirely.
Without hesitation, Maya bolted toward the open loading dock doors, her bound hands awkward as she balanced herself against the wind. But before she could reach the ladder leading down to the water, a sleek black police cruiser tore around the corner of the warehouse, its tires screeching against the wet asphalt as it slid to a halt right in front of the exit.
The driver's side door flew open, and a tall, broad-shouldered police detective in a heavy wool trench coat stepped out, his hand resting reassuringly on the holster of his service weapon. Behind him, two uniform patrol officers stepped out with their shields flashing.
"Freeze! Nobody move!" Detective Vance—no, Detective Miller—ordered sharply, his voice echoing off the metal walls.
Elena recovered her composure with terrifying speed. She stepped forward smoothly into the doorway, raising her hands in a gesture of pure, innocent distress, her expression instantly shifting into that of a worried citizen.
"Thank goodness you're here, Officer!" Elena called out, her voice trembling slightly with masterclass theatricality. "This troubled teenager broke into our corporate facility early this morning and attacked one of my associates when we caught her trying to steal confidential financial documents!"
Maya stared in absolute horror as Detective Miller walked past her without a glance, focusing entirely on Elena and Julian, who were already playing the part of cooperative victims.
"Detective! She's lying!" Maya shouted, straining against the nylon ropes binding her wrists. "They framed my father and stole his entire firm! Check my backpack—I have the download files right here!"
Detective Miller turned slowly, looking at Maya with a deeply disappointed, paternal expression that felt sickeningly familiar. He walked over, grabbed the canvas backpack from Elena’s hands, and unzipped it. Instead of the laptop containing the encrypted server logs, he pulled out a heavy plastic bag filled with banded bundles of hundred-dollar bills—the exact corporate cash reserves reported missing from Arthur’s firm.
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The bag of cash hadn't been in her backpack when she left the bus terminal.

Detective Miller held up the bag of stolen money, looking at Maya with a grim shake of his head. "Well, Maya," the detective said heavily. "It looks like your father was right about you after all."
