Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Slammed Door

The hardwood floor of the entryway felt freezing beneath Maya’s sneakers. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, jagged gasps as she clutched the heavy black trash bag in her right hand. Across the narrow hallway, her father stood rigid, his face flushed with a furious, ugly purple hue. His index finger jabbed violently toward the open front door, cutting through the heavy air like a knife.
"Pack your things and get out of my house!" Arthur roared, spittle flying from his lips as his chest heaved with unchecked rage.
Maya dropped her overloaded canvas backpack. It hit the wooden planks with a dull, heavy thud right beside the plastic trash bag, sending a minor vibration up her trembling legs. She stared at him, her eyes wide and bloodshot, desperate to find a single shred of paternal doubt in his hardened gaze. There was none. Only ice.
Behind Arthur, standing near the living room archway, Elena crossed her arms tightly over her brown leather jacket. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk curved the corner of Elena’s painted lips, watching Maya’s world collapse with cold amusement. Next to Elena, Julian stood motionless in his all-black attire, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, observing the spectacle like a vulture waiting for scraps.
"Dad! I didn't do anything wrong! It was them!" Maya screamed, her voice cracking into a raw, desperate sob as hot tears finally spilled over her lower lashes. She pointed a shaking finger directly at Elena and Julian. "They set me up! Look at them! They planted that drawer! Ask them what was really in the garage!"
Arthur didn't even flinch. His glare intensified, burning with a toxic mixture of betrayal and absolute conviction. He stepped forward, invading her personal space, his finger still leveled at her face like a loaded weapon.
"Don't ever come back here again!" Arthur yelled, his voice dropping an octave into a gravelly snarl that cut Maya deeper than any physical blow could have managed.
Before Maya could draw another breath to defend herself, Elena stepped forward smoothly, her voice dripping with venom as she whispered something into Arthur’s ear that made his expression freeze instantly. Maya watched in horror as her father’s hand reached out, grabbed the heavy oak door, and slammed it shut with a deafening crash, locking the deadbolt with a chilling final click.

Maya stood alone in the dark, freezing porch outside, clutching her trash bag as her phone suddenly buzzed in her pocket with an anonymous text containing a photo of her father's signature on a mysterious document.
