Chapter 9 - The Darkness Inside

Total darkness consumed the subterranean vault as the primary electrical grid suffered a complete, catastrophic failure. The tactical flashlights mounted on the operators’ carbines snapped on in unison, cutting brilliant beams of white light through the drifting dust and smoke.

“Secure the perimeter! Watch the doors!” Commander Vance barked, his voice sharp with sudden irritation as his tactical formation was momentarily thrown into disarray.

In the sudden confusion, Thaddeus dropped low, sweeping his leg against the knees of the nearest tactical officer. The heavy-set operative crashed hard onto the concrete floor, his suppressed carbine clattering away into the shadows. Thaddeus scrambled forward, grabbing the weapon and kicking it across the room toward Clara.

Clara didn’t pick up the gun. Guns were crude tools of desperation, and she had never operated out of desperation. Instead, she used the blinding beam of the tactical flashlights to slip silently behind a massive, towering row of archive shelving.

“Find them! Tear this aisle apart!” Commander Vance shouted, the sound of heavy combat boots thundering across the concrete as the tactical officers fanned out.

Arthur Vance stumbled backward in the dark, coughing violently as the heavy dust filled his lungs. He reached blindly for the wall, his fingers trembling as he tried to find the auxiliary light switch. “Commander! She has the ring! If she reaches the service elevator, everything we built is finished!”

“Shut up, Arthur!” Vance snapped, sweeping his weapon’s beam back and forth across the dark racks.

Clara moved with absolute silence, her long black evening gown gathered in one hand to prevent it from snagging on the metal framing. The red wine stain on her chest seemed to absorb the stray beams of light, rendering her an indistinct shadow moving between the towering stacks of forgotten corporate history.

She reached the end of the aisle where the emergency service elevator was located. The digital call button was glowing a faint, steady green—a sign that the remote override she had transmitted earlier had successfully severed the building’s local security loop and restored power to the private shaft.

She pressed the button. The heavy doors slid open instantly, revealing the brightly lit interior of the private cabin.

Before she could step inside, a heavy hand slammed against the door frame, blocking her path. Commander Vance stepped out of the shadows, his tactical carbine lowered just enough to point directly at her chest.

“End of the line, Clara,” Vance whispered, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. “You built an impressive trap, but you forgot that the men who hold the guns always write the final chapter.”
