Chapter 5 - The Archives of Betrayal

The basement archives were cold, smelling of ancient paper, damp concrete, and ozone from the heavy server racks humming rhythmically in the gloom. The overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently as Clara stepped off the service elevator, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor.
At the far end of the long aisle, illuminated by the harsh blue glare of a portable laptop screen, a man in a rumpled suit was frantically typing strings of code into a command prompt. It was Arthur Vance, Julian’s uncle and the mastermind behind the legal framework of their fraudulent empire.
“You’re wasting your time, Arthur,” Clara’s voice cut through the hum of the servers, echoing sharply off the concrete walls.
Arthur gasped, dropping a flash drive that clattered loudly against the floor. He spun around, his eyes wide with desperate fury as he recognized the woman standing at the end of the aisle.
“You,” Arthur spat, his voice trembling despite his attempt at composure. “You think a little boardroom coup gives you ownership of this entire infrastructure? The federal government will invalidate every single asset you’ve seized by morning.”
“Is that what Senator Hayes promised you when he signed off on my wrongful termination?” Clara asked, walking slowly toward him, her expression an impassive mask of absolute control.
Arthur’s face twisted into an ugly grimace. “Hayes doesn’t care about you or your algorithms. He cares about national security contracts. And if you think you can walk in here and dismantle a multi-billion-dollar enterprise without triggering a national crisis, you’re more delusional than Julian.”
Clara stopped just out of arm's reach, looking down at the open laptop on the metal folding table. The screen displayed a live script designed to wipe the primary database clean before federal investigators could mirror the hard drives.
“I didn’t build this infrastructure for politicians to weaponize, Arthur,” she said quietly. “And I certainly didn’t spend three years in exile to let you burn the evidence of your complicity.”
Arthur let out a harsh, bitter laugh, reaching slowly behind his back toward his briefcase. “You talk about evidence, Clara, but you forgot one crucial detail.”

Before Clara could react, Arthur pulled a heavy mechanical override switch from his briefcase and slammed it down into the central terminal port, instantly bypassing the digital locks and triggering a deafening, high-pitched alarm that echoed throughout the entire subterranean level.
