Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Leverage

The cold steel barrel of the carbine pressed lightly against the fabric of Clara’s black evening gown, right over the dark wine stain on her chest. The fluorescent light from the elevator cabin spilled over her face, highlighting the absolute calm in her dark eyes.
“You think shooting me here, in a basement vault, will make the federal investigation disappear?” Clara asked, her voice remarkably even, carrying no trace of panic.
Commander Vance didn’t flinch, though his thumb hovered over the weapon’s safety switch. “Nobody is going to shoot you, Clara. You’re simply going to step inside this elevator, hand over the micro-SD card, and take a very long, permanent vacation to a private facility where your medical history can be appropriately... revised.”
Arthur Vance staggered up behind his nephew, wheezing heavily as he clutched his bruised ribs. “Don't listen to her words, Commander! She’s a ghost. Make her vanish before the federal marshals breach the upper lobby!”
Before Commander Vance could tighten his finger on the trigger, a sharp, rhythmic series of double-chimes echoed from the service elevator’s internal control panel. The cabin display flickered, shifting from a secure local network status to a pulsing amber global broadcast warning.
Vance frowned, glancing down at the elevator screen. “What is that?”
Clara let out a slow, controlled breath, her lips curving into a cold, confident smile. “That, Commander, is the dead-man switch I programmed into theSterling mainframe three years ago—the exact day Julian and your uncle threw me out of this building.”
The elevator speaker crackled to life, broadcasting a crisp, automated voice across the entire subterranean floor: “Global data synchronization complete. Encrypted financial ledgers, political bribe logs, and unauthorized defense contracts transmitting to all international regulatory agencies in three... two...”
Commander Vance’s face drained of color. He dropped his carbine’s barrel, his eyes widening in sheer horror as he realized the magnitude of what had been set in motion. “Stop it! Shut the terminal down!”
“You can’t shut down a decentralized broadcast originating from twelve distinct orbital satellites simultaneously, Commander,” Clara said smoothly. She reached into her clutch, pulled out the small gold ring, and held it up between her fingers so the harsh elevator light caught the engraved crest. “You and Senator Hayes spent years building an empire on stolen foundations. You forgot the oldest rule of engineering: if you don’t secure your core architecture, the original architect can always reclaim her design.”

With a sudden, deafening roar, the heavy reinforced security doors at the far end of the basement archives exploded inward in a shower of sparks and shattered concrete.
