Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The sleek town car glided silently through the rain-slicked streets of Manhattan, the amber streetlights casting elongated shadows across the leather interior. Clara stared out the tinted window, her diamond drop earrings catching the faint glow of passing neon signs.
Thaddeus sat across from her, tapping a digital tablet that glowed softly in the dark cabin. “All digital footprints linking your original patents to Julian’s shell companies have been successfully wiped and re-encrypted under your maiden name,” he reported without looking up.
“And the board members who helped him orchestrate the coup?” Clara asked, her voice calm.
“Resigned as of twenty minutes ago. Their private estates are currently being audited by our forensic team. By morning, they won't even have the funds to hire defense attorneys.” Thaddeus handed the tablet to her.
Clara scrolled through the cascading financial ledgers. Every account Julian had hidden in the Cayman Islands was now red, locked behind triple-encrypted firewall keys that only she possessed. It had taken her three years of meticulous planning, living in the shadows while Julian paraded her stolen success across society gala pages, to build this trap.
“He thinks this is just a corporate hostile takeover,” Clara murmured, tracing the edge of the gold ring she had recovered from the ballroom floor.
“Most men of his caliber lack the imagination to see the personal cost of their greed,” Thaddeus replied quietly. “They assume that because someone builds quietly, they lack the teeth to bite.”
The car turned sharply, entering the private underground garage of the Sterling Tower—the very building from which Julian had had her physically evicted three years ago. The security gate lifted automatically as the vehicle's license plate scanned, a quiet acknowledgement of absolute power returning to its rightful owner.
Clara adjusted the straps of her sleeveless black evening gown, the dried red wine stain still stiff against her chest. She refused to change. She wanted every executive remaining in that building to look at her and remember the exact moment their house of cards collapsed.

As the car glided into her designated parking space, Thaddeus paused with his hand on the door handle. “There is one complication, Clara. Julian didn’t act alone. Someone inside the federal regulatory commission signed off on your unlawful termination.”
