Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

“Security! Get her out!” Julian’s voice cracked across the cavernous marble ballroom, vibrating with an ugly, unrefined panic that cut through the polite murmurs of Manhattan’s elite.
Clara stood motionless amid the wreckage of her dignity, the dark wine stain blooming like a fresh wound across the chest of her black silk evening gown. She did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice to match his frantic display.
“You really think I’m nobody, Julian?” she asked, her tone dangerously low, carrying the weight of a decade of erased labor.
“You’re a disgraced nobody in a stained dress!” the blonde woman in the red gown sneered, stepping closer to Julian while swirling amber champagne in her crystal glass.
Julian’s face flushed a deep, mottled red as he pointed a trembling finger at the double doors. “Get her out of my sight before I have you thrown in a dumpster!”
Clara ignored them both, her dark wavy hair shifting as she bent down with agonizing slowness. Her fingers brushed the cold marble floor, picking up the small gold ring that had slipped from Julian’s pocket during his hysterical outburst. It was an antique band bearing the private crest of the Sterling Board of Directors—a crest Julian had no legal right to possess.
She straightened up, her gaze locking onto Julian with a cold, absolute confidence that made the blood drain from his face. She pulled her sleek smartphone from her small dark clutch, pressing it to her ear while maintaining direct eye contact.
“Thaddeus?” she said smoothly.
“Yes, ma’am,” the crisp, immediate reply crackled through the phone speaker, clearly audible in the sudden silence of the room.
“Fire the CEO. Freeze his accounts.”
Julian let out a harsh, nervous laugh, trying desperately to regain his footing in front of the staring crowd. “You hired someone to pretend you’re important?” he mocked, though his eyes darted nervously toward the heavy mahogany doors.

Before Clara could deliver her final blow, the massive oak doors swung inward with terrifying precision. Four towering elderly security guards in immaculate dark suits marched in, flanked not by hotel staff, but by federal marshals holding federal arrest warrants for corporate embezzlement.
