Chapter 2 - The Federal Ledger

The heavy mahogany doors locked shut with a definitive click, sealing the panic inside the grand ballroom. Federal marshals bypassed Julian entirely, their gloved hands extending toward the terrified blonde woman in the red gown as they clamped silver cuffs around her wrists.

Julian stumbled backward, his shiny patent leather shoes skidding against the polished marble. “There must be some mistake! I am the executive director of this conglomerate!” he shouted, his voice pitching higher as the marshals ignored his frantic protests and pulled out a thick leather-bound folder.

Clara stood at the edge of the murmuring crowd, the small gold ring cool against her palm. She slipped it into the velvet interior of her clutch, her breathing steady and measured. The red stain on her black evening gown looked less like a spill now and more like a warning sign.

“There is no mistake, Mr. Vance,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the threshold.

An elderly man with silver hair and sharp, intelligent eyes stepped forward. It was Thaddeus Sterling himself, the elusive founder and majority shareholder of the global empire Julian had spent the last five years looting. Thaddeus didn't look at Julian; he walked straight to Clara, offering a respectful nod that stunned the onlookers into absolute silence.

“The board has already convened via emergency protocol,” Thaddeus said quietly to Clara, his tone deferential. “Your shares have been restored, and the offshore accounts linked to the embezzlement have been successfully neutralized.”

Julian grabbed the lapels of his tuxedo, his chest heaving as the reality of his financial ruin began to set in. “Clara, wait! We can talk about this! You built this division with me, we can share—!”

“You stole my name off the foundational patents, Julian,” Clara interrupted, her voice devoid of anger, which made it infinitely more terrifying. “You took my research, my contacts, and my life’s work, and then you had me physically thrown out of our own corporate headquarters. Did you really think I wouldn't keep the master keys?”

She turned her back on him, walking slowly toward the exit. Thaddeus fell into step beside her, holding open the heavy door.

Julian lunged forward, desperate to grab her arm, but a pair of federal agents intercepted him, shoving him harshly onto the marble floor. As Clara stepped out into the cool New York night, she heard Julian’s desperate, high-pitched scream echoing off the high ceilings.
