Chapter 7 - The Iron Trap

The heavy steel fire doors vibrated as a series of heavy deadbolts slid into place from the outside, sealing the basement archives into a concrete vault. The flashing red emergency lights cast an eerie, rhythmic pulse across the smoke-filled aisle.
“The automated security lockdown,” Thaddeus muttered, running his hand over the thick steel keypad embedded in the door frame. “Arthur didn’t just fry the servers; he rerouted the facility's perimeter defense system to isolate this wing.”
Arthur let out a raspy, triumphant laugh from his position against the server rack, wiping a smear of blood from his lip. “You think you’ve won because you have a micro-SD card? You’re locked in a vault designed to withstand a structural explosion. By the time anyone realizes you’re down here, Senator Hayes’s extraction team will have already confiscated every piece of hardware in this building.”
Clara ignored him, her gaze scanning the complex ductwork and industrial piping running along the high concrete ceiling. Her mind worked with cold, calculated precision, stripping away the panic and focusing entirely on the structural blueprints she had memorized years ago when designing the complex.
“Thaddeus, give me your encrypted satellite communicator,” she instructed quietly.
Thaddeus didn't hesitate. He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulling out a heavy, matte-black satellite device that bypassed all terrestrial networks.
Clara took the device, her fingers tapping a precise sequence of override codes into the keypad while pressing the transmitter against the steel casing of the nearest ventilation shaft. She knew that the ventilation grid shared a common power circuit with the emergency generator on the roof—a generator that Julian’s team hadn't modified because they didn't understand the building's legacy architecture.
“What are you attempting to do?” Arthur sneered, struggling against the wall as Thaddeus kept him pinned. “You can’t override a Level 5 structural seal from a handheld transmitter!”
“You designed this vault to keep people out, Arthur,” Clara said without looking back, her voice steady and controlled. “You forgot that I was the one who wrote the emergency evacuation scripts for this entire foundation.”
She pressed the final execution key. For three agonizing seconds, the room remained dead silent, the red strobes casting a hypnotic rhythm across the walls. Then, with a low, bone-shaking groan, the pneumatic seals on the heavy steel doors began to hiss, releasing a thick cloud of compressed air as the deadbolts retracted one by one.

Before the heavy doors could fully swing open, the sound of heavy combat boots echoing down the concrete corridor signaled the arrival of the federal extraction team.
