Chapter 13 - The Return of the Defeated

The private elevator chime sounded with a crisp, jarring ring, signaling the arrival of a passenger bypassing all structural security checkpoints. The heavy mahogany doors slid open to reveal Julian Vance standing in the threshold.
He was a broken reflection of the man who had screamed for her removal the night before. His black tuxedo was rumpled and stained, his bowtie hung loose around his unbuttoned collar, and his hair was wildly disheveled. His eyes were bloodshot and wide with a frantic, desperate energy that bordered on madness.
Clara did not move from her spot behind the mahogany desk. She kept the phone receiver pressed lightly to her ear, her dark eyes fixed on him with cold, unblinking composure.
“Security!” Julian yelled, his voice cracking violently as he stepped out into the suite. He stopped short when he realized there were no security guards to answer his call, only the empty, echoing space of the executive office.
“There is no security to save you this time, Julian,” Clara said into the phone, her voice carrying clearly across the room. She didn't bother to mute the board members listening on the line.
Julian stared at her, his chest heaving as he took a ragged step forward, his shiny patent leather shoes scuffing the polished floor. “You think you’ve won, don’t you?” he spat, a pathetic, hysterical laugh slipping from his lips. “You think a few federal warrants and a data burst can erase five years of my life? I built the public face of this empire!”
“You stole the face of this empire while burning its soul,” Clara replied softly, setting the phone down on the desk without hanging up so the entire board could hear every word.
Julian’s face flushed a mottled, angry red. He lunged forward, reaching into his jacket pocket with a frantic motion, as if searching for something to reclaim his lost power. “I’ll tear it all down! If I don't run this company, nobody will!”
Before Julian could pull his hand from his pocket, the private elevator chimed once more. This time, two federal marshals stepped out smoothly, their hands resting calmly on their service holsters. They didn’t draw their weapons; they simply moved with the quiet, terrifying inevitability of the law.
Julian froze, his hand still trapped inside his jacket. He turned his head slowly, watching as the marshals closed the distance between them without a single wasted movement.
“Julian Vance, you are in direct violation of your federal release conditions and pre-trial containment orders,” the lead marshal stated coldly, grabbing Julian by both arms with a grip of iron.
Julian thrashed wildly, screaming incoherently as the marshals slammed him against the glass wall of the office, snapping the silver cuffs around his wrists with practiced efficiency.
Clara watched the spectacle unfold without a flicker of emotion on her face. She reached out, picked up the phone receiver, and spoke back into the line.
“Are the board members still listening?” she asked calmly.
“Yes, Ms. Sterling,” the chairman’s voice trembled slightly through the speaker.

“Good,” Clara said, her eyes following the marshals as they dragged Julian backward into the elevator. “Let’s schedule the global press conference for noon. We have a new era to announce.”
