Chapter 9 - The Voice in the Dark

The cold steel pressing against the nape of Mark’s neck felt like a spike of pure ice. Every muscle in his body locked up instantly. He couldn't turn his head; he couldn't check his blind spot. He was entirely at the mercy of the unseen shadow standing directly behind him in the amber-tinted gloom of the nursery doorway.
Vance froze mid-motion, her hand hovering inches from her holstered service weapon. Her eyes narrowed into deadly slits as she stared past Mark, locking onto the intruder who had materialized out of the dead space of the hallway.
“David,” Vance said, her voice dropping into a dangerously calm register. “I’d advise you to step away from the civilian before you cross a line you can’t walk back from.”
A soft, low chuckle resonated from behind Mark. A tall man in a dark tactical jacket stepped into the dim amber light of the nursery. His dark hair was slightly tousled, his features twisted into a calm, almost cheerful expression that clashed violently with the situation. It was David—Mark’s trusted business partner, his golf buddy, the man who had shared drinks at his kitchen island just two nights ago.
David casually shifted his grip on the silenced pistol, keeping the barrel firmly planted against the base of Mark’s skull.
“Detective Vance, right?” David smiled, his eyes gleaming with psychotic clarity. “I have to hand it to you. You played the undercover maid routine brilliantly. I almost bought the accent. But you made one fatal mistake.”
“Oh?” Vance kept her stance balanced, her weight on the balls of her feet, waiting for a fraction of a second to make her move. “Enlighten me, David. What mistake did I make?”
“You underestimated how much money is sitting in our offshore accounts,” David replied smoothly. He glanced briefly at Mark, his expression turning mockingly sympathetic. “Isn’t that right, Mark? Your old pal David was just trying to secure your retirement fund. Too bad Elena couldn't handle the stress. She was always the weak link in the chain.”
Mark felt bile rise in the back of his throat. Every conversation, every shared laugh, every business deal over the last five years flashed before his eyes as a monumental, suffocating lie.
“You...” Mark choked out, his voice shaking with a rage so profound it nearly eclipsed his terror. “You killed Sarah. You laundered cartel money through my company... and you used my family as a human shield.”
“Business is business, Mark,” David said dismissively, pressing the cold barrel a fraction of an inch deeper into Mark’s skin. “And right now, my business is getting out of this house with the hard drive containing our ledger. Which happens to be sitting right in Elena’s designer handbag downstairs. So here is how this is going to go.”
David’s smile vanished, replaced by a ruthless, unyielding edge.
“You are going to hand the baby to the detective, Mark. And you are going to walk ahead of me down to the garage. If I see so much as a twitch from your little police backup team, I put a bullet through your spine before you hit the second-floor landing.”
Vance’s eyes darted toward Mark, silently signaling a desperate plea for patience.
“Don't do it, Mark,” Vance warned softly. “The moment you hand her the baby, you lose your leverage.”
“I don't have a choice!” Mark hissed, tears of helpless frustration stinging his eyes. He looked down at Lily, who was staring up at him with wide, uncomprehending blue eyes. The thought of a bullet tearing through his body—leaving his daughter entirely unprotected in the hands of a madman—shattered his resolve.
With trembling hands, Mark carefully transferred sleeping Lily into Vance’s waiting arms. Vance caught the toddler gently, pulling her tight against her chest while keeping her hand locked onto the grip of her concealed weapon.
“Smart boy,” David purred, releasing the pressure against Mark’s neck but keeping the gun leveled at his spine. “Now, walk. Nice and slow.”
Mark took his first step forward toward the doorway, leaving the white nursery behind. But as he stepped out into the dim hallway, the emergency amber lights abruptly clicked off entirely, plunging the entire house into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

A deafening roar shattered the silence from the floor below, followed by the blinding flash of a massive explosion that blew the front foyer doors completely off their hinges.
