Chapter 10 - The Blast in the Foyer

The shockwave from the explosion tore through the walls like a physical blow. The floor buckled slightly beneath Mark’s feet, sending him stumbling forward into the blackness of the hallway. Shouts echoed from below as smoke billowed up the stairwell, carrying the acrid stench of burnt wiring and heavy explosives.
In the pitch-black corridor, the element of surprise shifted in a split second.
“Go! Go! Go!” Vance’s voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding from somewhere near the nursery doorway.
A deafening volley of automatic gunfire erupted from the end of the hall as David, blinded by the sudden blast and smoke, blindly fired toward the stairwell. Sparks showered off the drywall, illuminating the hallway in brief, strobe-like flashes of white light.
Mark didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins, overriding his terror. He dropped low to the hardwood floor, crawling blindly through the thick, choking smoke. He didn't know where David was standing in the dark, but he knew he couldn't let the man escape.
“Mark! Get down!” Vance’s voice yelled out from the gloom, accompanied by the distinct thud-thud of her service weapon returning fire down the corridor.
A heavy boot suddenly connected with Mark’s shoulder, sending him sprawling sideways against the baseboard.
“Get out of my way, you idiot!” David snarled, his voice laced with frantic desperation as he scrambled toward the service stairs, his tactical advantage entirely shattered by the blast.
Mark reacted purely on instinct. Ignoring the searing pain in his shoulder, he lunged upward from the floor, wrapping his arms around David’s ankles and pulling hard.
David cursed loudly, losing his balance and crashing heavily onto the hardwood floor with a sharp thud. His silenced pistol went skidding across the slick surface, disappearing into the darkness toward the master bedroom.
“You arrogant son of a bitch!” David roared, rolling over and driving a brutal fist straight into Mark’s jaw.
The impact sent a shockwave of pain through Mark’s skull, blinding him with white-hot agony. He tasted warm copper on his tongue. But Mark didn't let go; he grabbed the collar of David’s tactical jacket, hauling himself on top of his former partner and driving his fists downward with every ounce of fury he possessed.
Before David could retaliate, the beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight cut through the smoke, illuminating the chaotic struggle.
“NYPD! Stop right there or I will drop you!” Vance shouted, stepping over the threshold with Lily safely tucked in one arm and her service weapon leveled directly at David’s head.
David froze, his hands hovering in the air as blood trickled from his split lip. He stared up at the barrel of Vance’s gun, realizing the game was finally, definitively over.
“Hands behind your back. Now,” Vance ordered coldly.
As Vance moved forward to slap the cuffs onto David, a sudden, bright beam of light swept across the broken window at the end of the hallway. The deep, rhythmic thrumming of helicopter blades vibrated through the roof timbers.
“Air support is overhead. Perimeter is locked down,” a voice crackled through Vance’s radio. “We have visual on a secondary vehicle attempting to flee the garage exit.”
Mark pushed himself off David, wiping blood from his mouth with the back of his hand. He looked down at his former business partner in disgust, before turning his gaze toward Vance, who was handing a tearful, startled Lily back into his open arms.
“Is it over?” Mark whispered, cradling his daughter tightly against his chest, burying his face in her soft pink pajamas.
Vance kept her gun trained on David while she spoke into her collar mic.

“Not quite yet, Mr. Hayes,” Vance said grimly, her eyes fixed on the smoke billowing up from the ruined foyer. “The person driving that secondary vehicle in the garage... isn't David.”
