Chapter 2 - The Deleted Evidence

The heavy silence in the nursery felt suffocating. Mark stood frozen with Lily clutched tightly against his chest, his eyes darting frantically between his wife and the pale nanny. The smartphone screen still glowed in his palm, replaying the silent, looping footage of baby Lily playing alone on the white carpet. The timestamp in the corner of the video was wrong. It was stamped three hours ago, not three minutes ago.
Mark’s breathing hitched. He looked at Elena, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
“Elena, what is this? This footage is from this afternoon. Where is the live feed?”
Elena didn’t flinch. She crossed her arms over her beige top, her posture rigid. She didn’t look at Claire; she only stared at Mark as if she were guiding him through a carefully constructed minefield.
“There is no live feed anymore, Mark. I disabled the cloud sync yesterday. Only I have the master password.”
Claire finally found her voice, though it shook violently. She took a half-step forward, lifting her hands in a defensive plea.
“Mr. Hayes, please listen to me. I didn't drop her. I found her like this. When I walked in, she was already crying on the floor. I only picked her up to comfort her. Mrs. Hayes was already standing by the doorway before I even touched her.”
Mark turned his heavy gaze back to Elena, demanding answers with his eyes. But Elena simply scoffed, a bitter, humorless sound that echoed off the white walls.
“Oh, spare us the performance, Claire. You’ve been clumsy all week. You dropped a ceramic vase on Tuesday, and you nearly tripped over the stroller yesterday. It was only a matter of time before you hurt my daughter.”
“I didn't hurt her!” Claire’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “Ask yourself why Mrs. Hayes was recording the room from the hallway instead of coming in to help. Ask her why the memory card was empty when I checked the unit this morning!”
Mark’s head whipped toward his wife. The color had completely drained from Elena’s face, replaced by a sudden, dangerous flash of anger. Elena stepped forward, invading Mark’s personal space, her voice rising in defensive panic.
“Don’t you dare listen to her, Mark! She’s trying to manipulate you. She knows she messed up and she’s trying to save her job by spinning some paranoid fantasy!”
Mark looked down at his daughter, then back to the two women standing before him. The narrative didn't fit. The math of the situation was entirely broken. If the camera didn't record live, and Elena changed the card, how had Elena known the exact second to storm into the room screaming that Claire had dropped the baby?
Mark’s grip on Lily tightened protectively. He slowly reached into his pocket with his free hand, pulling out his own phone.
“I’m calling the police,” Mark said flatly, his thumb hovering over the keypad.
Elena let out a sharp, breathless gasp and lunged forward, grabbing Mark’s wrist with terrifying force.
