Chapter 3 - The Broken Alibi

Mark stared down at his wife’s hand clamped tightly around his wrist. Her fingers were trembling, her knuckles stark white against the dark fabric of his sleeve. The desperate panic in Elena’s eyes completely contradicted her earlier outward composure.

“Why can’t I call the police, Elena?” Mark asked, his voice dangerously low. “If our daughter was just dropped by a negligent nanny, calling the authorities is the only logical step. Unless... there’s something else you forgot to mention.”

Elena quickly retracted her hand, smoothing down the front of her beige top with jerky, unnatural motions. She forced a strained, unconvincing smile that failed to reach her cold eyes.

“You’re overreacting, Mark. I just—I don’t want the police tracking mud all over the house, and I certainly don’t want social services launching an investigation into our home based on a minor household accident. It’ll be a PR nightmare for your firm.”

“My firm?” Mark’s voice rose, a spike of genuine anger piercing his confusion. “Elena, we are talking about Lily’s safety! You screamed that she was dropped, you had a fake video queued up on your phone, and now you’re actively blocking me from getting professionals involved. What is actually happening in this house?”

Claire stood quietly by the white crib, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. She watched the married couple tear each other apart with a strange, calculated stillness. She didn't look like a terrified, cornered employee anymore. She looked like a spectator watching a play whose script she already knew by heart.

“You might as well tell him, Mrs. Hayes,” Claire said softly, her tone laced with a chilling calm. “He’s going to find out the truth the moment he looks at the router logs anyway.”

Elena whipped around, her face contorting with sheer malice. She pointed a trembling finger at the nanny.

“Shut your mouth, Claire! One more word out of you and I swear I will ruin your life so thoroughly you’ll never work another day in this city!”

“Too late for that, isn’t it?” Claire replied evenly, tilting her head. “You already tried to ruin mine by framing me for child abuse.”

Mark stepped between them, shielding Lily with his entire body. The weight of the realization was crashing down on him like a tidal wave. The missing memory card, the fake video feed, Elena’s explosive reaction, and Claire’s eerie composure—none of it pointed toward a clumsy nanny. It all pointed toward a deliberate, premeditated trap.

Mark looked straight into his wife’s eyes, his voice flat and devoid of warmth.

“Pack a bag, Elena. Or I swear to God, I will call the police right now and let them sort out whatever sick game you’re playing.”

Elena gasped, taking a stumbling step backward. The mask had completely slipped, revealing a desperate, cornered woman on the verge of total collapse.

“You can’t kick me out of my own home, Mark,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking. “Especially not when you don't even know why I had to frame her.”

Mark paused, his hand hovering over his phone. A cold dread pooled in his stomach.

“What are you talking about?”

Elena swallowed hard, glancing nervously at Claire before looking back at her husband with tear-filled eyes.

“I didn't frame her to hurt Lily, Mark. I framed her because Claire isn't who she says she is. The woman standing in our nursery isn't our nanny at all... she’s my stalker.”
