Chapter 1 - The Panic in the White Nursery

The blindingly bright white nursery felt like a suffocating cage. On the spotless white carpet, Claire knelt with trembling shoulders, her grey maid uniform slightly askew. In her arms, one-year-old Lily wailed in her pastel pink pajamas, tears streaking down the toddler’s flushed cheeks. The air vibrated with raw, jagged tension.
Elena stormed into the room, her dark hair flying, pointing a manicured finger directly at the kneeling woman. Her voice cut through the air like broken glass.
“She dropped her!”
Mark burst through the doorway right behind his wife, his tall frame tense, his dark button-down shirt straining against his broad chest. His eyes darted from the crying baby to Claire’s pale, tear-stained face. He didn't hesitate. He dropped to his knees, ripping the baby from Claire’s weak grasp and pulling Lily fiercely against his chest. Lily’s cries muffled against his dark shirt.
Mark turned his furious, protective gaze toward Claire. His voice dropped into a low, terrifying rumble.
“Fire her right now.”
Claire scrambled backward, rising unsteadily near the white crib. Her chest heaved. She looked up in absolute despair at the high corner of the wall, where a small plastic security camera stared back at them with a tiny blinking red light.
Elena’s voice rang out from off-camera, sharp and devoid of mercy.
“Please watch the camera first.”
Mark froze, holding Lily tighter. Elena stepped into his line of sight, her face a mask of cold fury. She looked intently at her husband, speaking with a strange, deliberate firmness that made the hairs on Mark’s arms stand up.
Elena narrowed her eyes.
“That camera doesn’t record. I changed the memory card.”
Mark blinked, his brow furrowing in confusion. But before he could process the sinister implications of his wife’s words, Elena reached into her pocket and slid her smartphone out. She tapped the screen twice and thrust it into Mark’s trembling hand.
Mark looked down at the glowing display. The screen showed a black-and-white security camera playback. On the grainy video, baby Lily sat entirely alone on the exact same white carpet, happily playing with a plastic stacking toy. There was no Claire in the frame. There was no fall. There was only an empty room and a staged illusion.
Mark’s face shifted from confusion to utter, paralyzing shock. His eyes widened in horror. He slowly raised his gaze from the glowing screen to stare down at Claire, his voice cracking with disbelief.
“Claire... What did you do?”
May you like
Claire didn't answer right away. She slowly raised her chin, her eyes hardening as a chilling silence fell over the room.
