Chapter 8 - The Laser Sight in the Hallway

The red dot burned against the dark fabric of Mark’s shirt like a glowing coal. Instinct was the only thing that moved him; Mark whipped his body around, pressing his back flat against the nursery doorframe and shielding Lily with his entire torso.

“Get down!” Vance roared, drawing her service weapon in a single fluid motion and diving toward the hallway wall.

Uniformed officers scrambled for cover, shouting overlapping commands into their radios as heavy boots thudded against the hardwood floor.

“Shooter in the west corridor! Second-story window angle!” an officer barked, leveling his rifle down the dim hallway.

Mark’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Lily let out a startled cry, burying her face into his shoulder. The terrifying reality crashed down on him with crushing force: they weren't just dealing with a hidden crime; they were trapped in the crosshairs of professionals who left no loose ends.

Down the hallway, half-hidden by the shadows near the guest suite, a tall figure in dark clothing stood framed by an open window. The moonlight cut across a ski mask, reflecting the cold, dead metal of a silenced pistol pointed directly toward the nursery door.

“Drop the weapon! NYPD! Drop it now!” Vance yelled, her voice cutting through the tension like a razor blade as she peered around the corner, her gun locked onto the target.

The figure in the dark didn't hesitate. Instead of firing at the officers, the gunman raised his left hand, pulled a small remote device from his pocket, and mashed his thumb down hard on a red button.

A heavy, mechanical clank echoed from deep within the walls, followed by an ominous low-frequency hum that vibrated through the floorboards.

“What did he just do?” Mark yelled over the rising hum, his voice shaking.

Vance’s face went pale. She lowered her comms earpiece for a fraction of a second, listening to frantic reports from the ground-floor team.

“The perimeter breakers!” Vance cursed sharply. “He just triggered an electrical surge through the smart-home system. He’s locking down all the exterior smart-locks and cutting the main power grid!”

As if on cue, the blindingly bright lights of the nursery flickered violently twice and then died completely, plunging the entire room into pitch blackness. Emergency backup LEDs kicked in seconds later, casting a sickly, dim amber glow across the white walls and the empty crib.

From the hallway came the sharp crack of a silenced gunshot. A bullet punched clean through the drywall inches from Vance’s head, showering her shoulders in white plaster dust.

“Return fire! Suppressive fire down the west corridor!” Vance ordered, squeezing off two quick rounds before ducking back behind the heavy wooden doorframe.

Amidst the gunfire and chaos, a door slammed shut at the far end of the hallway. The sniper had used the distraction to slip through a connecting service stairwell leading directly down to the underground garage.

Mark stood frozen in the amber glow, his breathing coming in ragged gasps. He looked down at Lily, who was trembling violently in his arms. He couldn't stay here. Every second they lingered in this house, the danger multiplied exponentially.

Vance pushed herself up from the floor, her eyes fierce and determined. She holstered her weapon for a split second to check her tactical radio.

“All units, the suspect is descending to the sub-level garage via the service stairs. Cut off all exits! Do not let him reach the vehicle pool!” Vance barked into the mic, before turning to Mark. “Mr. Hayes, give me your hand. We are getting out of here right now.”

Mark nodded, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. He reached out to take Vance’s hand, but before their fingers could touch, a cold, metallic barrel pressed firmly against the back of Mark’s neck.

“Drop the baby, Mark,” a smooth, familiar voice whispered softly into his ear. “Or the little girl gets a front-row seat to your funeral.”
