Chapter 7 - The Second Accomplice

The chaotic shouting from the master bedroom shattered the heavy silence of the nursery. Mark froze, his arms tightening instinctively around sleeping Lily as uniformed officers rushed past the doorway.
Detective Vance’s expression hardened instantly. She pressed two fingers to her earpiece, her eyes narrowing as she listened to the frantic radio chatter echoing through the hidden comms.
“Which window?” Vance demanded into her collar mic, her voice clipped and authoritative. “Description of the runner? Direction of travel?”
“South side of the property! Heading toward the wooded ravine!” a breathless voice crackled through the earpiece. “Height around six-one, dark clothing, wearing a ski mask! We lost visual in the tree line!”
Mark’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. An accomplice? For three weeks, he had believed it was just him, Elena, and the nanny living in this secluded suburban fortress. The realization that someone else had been lurking in the shadows of their home—someone working alongside Elena—sent a fresh wave of terror through his veins.
“An accomplice?” Mark shouted over the din of police boots and slamming doors, his voice cracking with disbelief. “Elena, who else is involved in this? Who was in our house?”
On the floor, Elena stopped sobbing. She slowly lowered her hands from her face. Instead of looking panicked or defeated, a bizarre, hysterical smile stretched across her tear-stained lips. She looked up at Mark with hollow, crazed eyes, laughing softly to herself.
“You think I acted alone, Mark?” Elena whispered, her voice dripping with venomous amusement. “You really don't know anything about the life we built, do you? You thought your little tech startup salary was paying for all this?”
Vance strode over to Elena, grabbing her by the upper arms and hauling her roughly to her feet. The other officers moved in, slapping cold steel cuffs onto Elena’s wrists with practiced efficiency. Elena didn't resist. She just kept staring at Mark, her smile widening into something grotesque.
“Read her her rights and secure the perimeter,” Vance ordered a nearby officer, before turning her sharp gaze back to Mark. She stepped closer, lowering her voice so the surrounding cops couldn't hear. “Mr. Hayes, your wife’s lifestyle, this expensive house, the private security system—none of it was funded by your software firm. The accounts were funneled through a shell company.”
Mark’s breath caught in his throat. “What are you talking about? I built my company from scratch.”
“You built the front,” Vance corrected bluntly. “Your business partner, David, has been laundering cartel money through your corporate accounts for over two years. And Sarah... poor Sarah didn't stumble on Elena’s psychiatric breakdown by accident. Sarah walked in on David and Elena transferring funds in the master study late at night.”
The room seemed to tilt sideways. Every memory Mark had of his business partner David—the friendly barbecues, the reassuring pats on the back, the late-night strategy meetings—shattered into jagged shards of absolute deceit. David wasn't just a colleague. He was an architect of the nightmare.
“David...” Mark breathed, the name tasting like poison. “David was here tonight? Is that who just jumped out the window?”
“Most likely,” Vance said grimly. She looked down at Lily, who stirred restlessly in Mark’s arms, blinking her heavy blue eyes open. “Mr. Hayes, you and your daughter are no longer safe in this house. You need to leave with me right now.”

Mark nodded mutely, turning toward the nursery door, desperate to escape the tainted walls of his own home. But as he stepped out into the hallway, a laser-red dot suddenly danced across his chest, followed by the chillingly sharp sound of a rifle bolt clicking into place from the dark end of the hallway.
