Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

The mention of Sarah hung in the air like a rotting corpse. Mark’s knees felt weak. He remembered Sarah—a sweet, quiet twenty-two-year-old college student who had vanished three months ago without a trace. Elena had claimed Sarah simply packed her bags in the middle of the night and quit out of nowhere, leaving her phone and keys on the kitchen counter. The police had closed the missing persons file after finding a brief text message sent from Sarah’s phone saying she needed to start a new life out of state.

Mark slowly turned his gaze back to his wife. Elena was no longer sobbing. She stood frozen against the white crib, her face completely drained of color, her eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror.

“Elena,” Mark said, his voice dropping to a horrifying, hollow whisper. “Where is Sarah?”

“Don’t listen to her, Mark!” Elena choked out, taking a frantic step toward him, her hands trembling violently. “She’s a monster! She’s trying to destroy our family! Sarah ran away, you know she did! We checked the text message!”

“A text message sent from a burner phone bought at a gas station ten miles away,” Claire interjected smoothly, pulling a folded piece of paper from her pocket and tossing it onto the white carpet near Mark’s feet. “Cell tower triangulation places Sarah’s actual phone inside this house at 3:00 AM on the night she disappeared. And if you check the master bedroom’s walk-in closet, Mr. Hayes, you’ll find that the floorboards near the shoe rack have been recently replaced.”

Mark stared down at the paper on the floor. It was a police forensics report header with a judge’s signature at the bottom—a search warrant request.

Elena let out a high-pitched, strangled sound, like an animal caught in a trap. She lunged toward the doorway, desperate to escape, but Mark moved with surprising speed. With Lily still clutched safely in one arm, he reached out with his free hand and grabbed Elena by the shoulder, spinning her around and shoving her back against the wall.

“You’re not going anywhere,” Mark growled, his face twisted in a mask of absolute fury and heartbreak. “We are going to walk into our bedroom right now, and you are going to show me that closet.”

“No! Mark, please!” Elena wailed, clawing at his arm, tears streaming freely down her face. “I had to do it! She saw things she wasn’t supposed to see! She was going to tell you about my relapses, she was going to take Lily away from me! I only pushed her! It was an accident!”

The confession dropped like a lead weight. The nursery fell into a dead, suffocating silence, broken only by the soft, rhythmic breathing of baby Lily sleeping against her father’s chest.

Mark felt his entire world shatter into a million irreparable pieces. The woman he loved, the mother of his child, was a murderer.

“You killed her,” Mark whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable grief. “You killed Sarah and lied to my face every single day.”

Elena stopped fighting. She slid down the wall until she sat in a heap on the floor, weeping uncontrollably, her beige top stained with dirt and tears. She looked up at Mark with pathetic, wide eyes, grasping at straws that had already burned to ash.

“I did it for us, Mark. I did it to keep our family together...”

Mark didn't look at her anymore. He turned away, his heart turning to ice, and looked at Claire. Claire nodded slowly, reaching into her pocket once more to pull out a small device.

“It’s time to call the real authorities, Mr. Hayes,” Claire said softly, pressing a button on her recorder. “Every single word she just said was captured live and transmitted directly to the precinct.”

Mark blinked, staring at Claire in sudden, renewed shock.

“Wait... You’re not just a whistleblower,” Mark said, his voice trembling. “Who the hell are you?”

Claire clicked off the recorder and looked him dead in the eye.
