Chapter 4 - The Impostor’s Smile

The nursery seemed to drop ten degrees. Mark stared at his wife, his mind struggling to process the impossible claim. He slowly turned his head to look at Claire, expecting to see a flash of panic, a desperate denial, or a burst of rage.
Instead, Claire smiled.
It wasn't a warm smile, nor was it a victorious smirk. It was a cold, flat, unsettling twitch of the lips that sent a shiver straight down Mark’s spine. Claire casually reached up, untied the dark hair bundled at the nape of her neck, and let her long locks tumble down around her shoulders. The transformation was subtle, but it instantly changed her entire presence. She looked older, sharper, and dangerously confident.
“A stalker, Elena?” Claire’s voice dropped its previous meekness, replaced by a smooth, articulate cadence that sounded entirely foreign. “Is that the story we’re going with today? How delightfully creative. Though I think ‘whistleblower’ is a much more accurate job title.”
Mark looked back and forth between the two women, feeling like a pawn in a game he didn't even know he was playing. He shifted Lily to his other arm, the baby now sleeping fitfully against his chest, exhausted from her earlier tears.
“Elena,” Mark said, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. “Who is this woman? And why is she wearing our maid’s uniform?”
Before Elena could answer, Claire stepped forward, ignoring Elena’s frantic head-shaking. Claire reached into the deep pocket of her grey skirt and pulled out a small, sleek flash drive, holding it up between two fingers like a rare prize.
“I am wearing this uniform, Mr. Hayes, because your brilliant wife hired me through an agency three weeks ago to care for your daughter. She didn't bother running a background check because she was in too much of a rush to find someone willing to work off-the-books cash-in-hand hours. Isn't that right, Elena?”
Elena lunged forward like a striking cat, trying to snatch the flash drive from Claire’s hand, but Claire sidestepped her with practiced ease. Elena stumbled against the white crib, her chest heaving as she glared at the other woman with unadulterated hatred.
“She’s lying!” Elena shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly against the pristine walls. “She hacked into my personal laptop! She stole my medical records! She’s mentally unstable, Mark! Look at her! She’s been watching us for months!”
“Your medical records?” Mark echoed, his heart hammering against his ribs. “What are you talking about, Elena? What medical records?”
Claire slipped the flash drive back into her pocket and crossed her arms. She locked eyes with Mark, her expression turning dead serious.
“She’s talking about the psychiatric evaluation she underwent six months ago, Mr. Hayes. The one that proves she was Baker-Acted for severe postpartum psychosis and violent delusions. The one she hid from you before you bought this house.”
Mark froze. The room seemed to spin on its axis. He looked down at Elena, who had slumped against the white crib, her face buried in her hands as silent, shaking sobs racked her body.
“Elena...” Mark whispered, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. “Is that true?”
Elena slowly lowered her hands. Her face was tear-streaked and horribly distorted with a mix of grief and rage. She looked up at Mark, her eyes burning with a desperate, manic fire.
“Yes, it’s true!” Elena screamed, abandoning all pretense. “I was sick! I got help! But she found out about it! She’s been blackmailing me for two weeks, Mark, threatening to tell you everything and take Lily away from me unless I gave her thousands of dollars!”
Claire let out a sharp, genuine laugh. “Blackmail? Oh, Elena, you really are a master of fiction. I don’t want your money. I wanted to expose what you did to the first nanny.”
Mark’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at Claire in utter horror, the pieces finally clicking together in the worst possible way.
“The first nanny?” Mark whispered. “What happened to Sarah?”
Claire’s smile vanished, her eyes locking onto Mark with chilling intensity.

“Ask your wife where Sarah is, Mr. Hayes. Because she never left this house.”
