Chapter 9 - The Figure in the Rusted Sedan

The rusted black sedan idled with a harsh, sputtering exhaust note that cut through the quiet night air of the hospital loading dock. Leo froze, his eyes locking onto the man stumbling out of the passenger door. Even beneath the grime, the gaunt cheeks and familiar shock of messy light brown hair were unmistakable.

"Dad!" Leo screamed, breaking away from Helen and sprinting across the pavement before anyone could stop him.

David Vance—not the director, but their father—collapsed to his knees just short of the ambulance bumper, catching himself with trembling hands against the cold asphalt. He looked up, his hollow eyes widening in disbelief as Leo threw his arms around his neck, burying his face in the rough fabric of his father's coat.

"Leo... oh, thank God, you're safe," David choked out, his voice raspy and broken as he pulled his son fiercely against his chest. "I tried to get back to you sooner, but they had men watching the apartment."

Detective Ramos and Helen rushed over, Ramos drawing her sidearm instinctively before recognizing the man and lowering her weapon with a sharp intake of breath.

"David Vance? The state police have an active bulletin out for your arrest regarding the clinic safe," Ramos said, stepping forward cautiously.

"Miller forged my signature on the transfer documents," David coughed, clutching his ribs with a grimace of pain. "He told me if I didn't take the fall, he’d make sure my children ended up in the state foster system where no one would ever find them. I had to run to protect them."

From inside the open back of the ambulance, Lily’s weak voice drifted out into the night air. "Daddy...?"

David’s head snapped toward the ambulance. Without a second thought, he pushed past the police line and climbed into the back, ignoring his own physical agony as he gathered Lily into his arms. She blinked her tired eyes open, a weak, relieved smile touching her pale lips as she wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.

"I'm here, baby girl, I'm right here," David whispered, tears streaming freely down his weathered cheeks as he kissed her forehead. "You're safe now. Daddy’s not going anywhere."

Detective Ramos watched the reunion with a softening expression, clicking her radio off before it could squawk with dispatch updates. She pulled the heavy leather journal from her trench coat pocket and held it out toward David.

"Your son handed this to me in the surgical suite," Ramos said quietly. "It has every fraudulent transaction Miller and the director authorized over the last three years. With this, your name will be cleared by morning."

David took the book with trembling fingers, nodding his thanks to the detective. But as he looked back up at Ramos, his expression turned grim and pale. "Detective... the ledger you have in your hand is only volume one. There's a second book."

Ramos frowned, her professional instincts instantly flaring back to life. "What do you mean, volume one? Where is the second part?"

Before David could answer, a loud, ear-splitting screech of tires echoed from the hospital entrance. A sleek black SUV rounded the corner at high speed, heading directly toward the ambulance bay with its high beams blindingly bright.
