Chapter 1 - The Reception Desk Dispute

The hospital hallway hummed with a sterile, relentless fluorescent light that buzzed softly against the peeling wallpaper of St. Jude’s municipal wing. Leo shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his eight-year-old knuckles gripping the edge of the high reception counter until his skin turned white. Beside him, seven-year-old Lily let out a thin, shuddering breath, her small hand pressing hard against her stomach beneath the worn fabric of her pink hoodie. Her face was dangerously pale, etched with dark circles that made her look decades older than her years.
Nurse Helen looked up from her computer monitor, her kind eyes widening as she took in the tattered clothes and gaunt faces of the two children standing alone beneath the towering front desk.
Leo leaned forward, his voice cracking with a desperate urgency that defied his tender age. "Excuse me, ma'am, could you please help us find work? We haven't eaten anything today."
Helen’s heart twisted in her chest, but she kept her voice gentle, shaking her head as she leaned across the counter. "I'm sorry, sweethearts, we're not able to offer work to children here."
A sharp, abrasive voice cut through the quiet lobby from behind the triage partition. Dr. Miller stepped into view, his white lab coat crisp and his expression cold as ice. He glared down at Leo and Lily with undisguised contempt.
"Helen, are you running a shelter now?" Dr. Miller snapped, crossing his arms tightly over his chest. "Security cleared these vagrants out of the east wing twice this week. They don't belong here, and you know hospital policy prohibits loitering."
"They are starving, Arthur, and the little girl is doubled over in pain," Helen retorted, her voice rising with sudden, protective heat as she stepped around the desk. "Look at them! Where is social services? Where is anyone?"
"Social services is backed up for months, and I am not running a charity ward for runaways," Miller barked back, his eyes narrowing as he glared directly at Leo. "Boy, tell me the truth right now. Where is your father? Did he leave you both behind because of his mounting gambling debts?"
Leo’s breath hitched. He instinctively pulled Lily closer to his side, his hazel eyes flashing with a fierce, defensive pride. "Our dad didn't leave us, and it's none of your business!"

"Don't lie to me," Miller stepped closer, his voice dropping into a harsh, menacing whisper. "I saw the police report from your apartment building this morning. Your father skipped town with four thousand dollars from the clinic's safe, and the authorities are looking everywhere for him."
