Chapter 5 - The Devil's Bargain

The fluorescent light overhead buzzed with a deafening intensity as Leo stared up at Dr. Miller. On the cold concrete floor beside him, Lily’s breathing grew fainter, her small hand ice-cold and limp within his grasp. The heavy leather-bound journal lay discarded a few feet away, its pages slightly parted in the dusty air, holding the dark secrets that could either ruin a corrupt doctor or buy his sister's life.
"You promise you can fix her?" Leo’s voice was a ragged whisper, stripped of all its youthful defiance. "You promise she won't die?"
"I am a surgeon, boy," Miller replied, his tone chillingly clinical as he knelt down and scooped Lily’s frail body effortlessly into his arms. "I save lives when it suits my schedule. Now pick up that book, wipe the dust off, and follow me through the back service stairwell before anyone sees us."
Leo scrambled to his feet, his hands shaking violently as he retrieved the journal and tucked it deep inside the front pocket of his blue hoodie. He scrambled up the concrete stairs directly behind the doctor, his legs burning with exhaustion, his mind racing through a nightmare he couldn't wake up from.
They emerged not into the sterile, brightly lit emergency ward, but into the labyrinthine corridors of the private wing on the seventh floor, a place normally reserved for wealthy donors and high-paying patients. The air here smelled of expensive potpourri and fresh linen, contrasting sharply with the grim reality of Lily’s failing health.
Miller rushed through a set of double doors marked Operating Suite B, kicking them open with his foot and laying Lily gently upon the stainless-steel examination table. Bright overhead surgical lamps clicked on automatically, flooding the room with a blinding, clinical white glare.
"Scrub in, wash your hands at the basin over there, and hand me the scalpel from the tray when I ask," Miller commanded sharply, already tearing open a sterile surgical gown with practiced efficiency.
Leo froze, staring at the gleaming rows of surgical instruments lined up neatly on the stainless-steel tray. "I... I can't do that. I'm just a kid."
"You want your sister to live or not?" Miller snapped, glaring over his shoulder with eyes burning with dark urgency. "Appendectomy is a standard procedure, but without immediate drainage, she has less than an hour to live. Decide right now, boy, because I am not taking the fall for a corpse."
Leo swallowed hard, fighting down the suffocating panic rising in his throat. He forced his legs to move toward the sink, turning the handle with trembling fingers and watching the warm water cascade over his dirty, bleeding knuckles.
As he began scrubbing his hands, the heavy oak doors at the far end of the surgical suite suddenly clicked, and the sound of a key turning in the secure lock echoed loudly through the silent room.

Miller froze scalpel in hand, his face draining of all color as the heavy door began slowly to swing open.
