Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Corridor

The sharp accusation hung in the damp hospital air, freezing Leo in his tracks. Lily let out a small, terrified sob and buried her face against Leo’s blue hoodie, her small frame trembling violently. Helen stepped between the children and Dr. Miller, her expression hardening into an angry mask.
"Arthur, that is enough," Helen whispered fiercely, her voice vibrating with suppressed rage. "They are seven and eight years old. Whatever their father did has nothing to do with these babies starving in our hallway. Back off right now."
Dr. Miller sneered, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses before turning on his heel. "Just remember to log them out by the end of your shift, Helen. I won't have my department flagged by the board for harboring vagrants."
As the heavy oak doors of the staff room swung shut behind the doctor, Helen dropped to her knees so she was eye-level with the children. Her professional exterior melted away, replaced by raw, aching concern. She reached out gently, touching Lily’s ice-cold hand.
"Listen to me, Leo, Lily," Helen said softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the vending machines down the hall. "I can't hire you here, and Miller is watching my every move. But there is something you need to know. Your father left something locked in the basement archive before he disappeared. He told me it belonged to your family."
Leo stared at her, suspicion warring with utter desperation in his big hazel eyes. "Our dad wouldn't hide things from us. He always said we shared everything."
"He was trying to protect you," Helen insisted, glancing nervously down the empty corridor. "It’s a ledger. It contains names of people who’ve been exploiting the clinic’s supply chain. That’s why Miller wants you gone. He’s terrified of what’s written inside those pages."
Lily lifted her head, her dark eyes wide and glassy. "My tummy hurts, Helen. Can we get medicine before we look for a book?"
Helen bit her lower lip, her mind racing against the clock. Her shift ended in twenty minutes, and the night security patrol was scheduled to sweep the lower levels at midnight. She unzipped her fleece jacket and draped it gently around Lily’s shivering shoulders, letting the oversized sleeves swallow the girl's small hands.
"There's an old service elevator behind the laundry room," Helen whispered, pressing a small brass key into Leo's palm. "Go down to sub-level three. Look for the room marked 'Biomedical Waste.' Behind the heavy shelving unit, there’s a loose vent."

Before Leo could ask another question, the heavy footsteps of the night security guard echoed loudly from the main entrance, his heavy boots crunching against the linoleum floor.
