Chapter 8 - The Detective's Promise

The harsh white glare of the surgical lamps cast long, distorted shadows across the tiles of the operating suite as paramedics rushed past Detective Ramos, lifting Lily onto a specialized stretcher with practiced efficiency. Oxygen masks and IV drips were hooked up in a flurry of movement, and Leo refused to let go of his sister's hand, running right alongside the rolling cart as it headed toward the elevators.

Detective Ramos walked step-for-step beside Leo, holding the heavy leather journal securely in her gloved hand. She glanced down at the pale, determined boy whose blue hoodie was stained with dust and tears.

"You're a very brave kid, Leo," Ramos said softly, her voice carrying a warmth that cut through the sterile chaos of the hospital hallway. "Your father would be proud of you for protecting this ledger."

Leo looked up at her, his big hazel eyes swimming with unsuspended tears. "Is Dad really in trouble, Detective? Did he steal that money like Dr. Miller said?"

Ramos sighed gently, slowing her pace just enough to give Leo a moment to breathe as the paramedics loaded Lily into the waiting elevator. "Your father was framed, Leo. For months, he tried to blow the whistle on Miller and Director Vance using fake supply invoices to drain the hospital's children's care fund. When he refused to stay quiet, they threatened your family. He hid this book to keep you safe until he could reach the district attorney."

"Then where is he now?" Leo asked, his voice cracking with desperate hope. "Why hasn't he called us?"

The elevator doors slid shut with a soft chime, cutting off Ramos's immediate response. The detective placed a comforting hand on Leo's thin shoulder as they descended toward the ground floor where an ambulance was idling with its lights flashing red against the night.

"We received an anonymous tip two hours ago that a man matching your father's description was seen boarding a freight train heading north," Ramos explained carefully, choosing her words to protect him from the harsher reality. "Our units are searching the rail yards right now. We're going to find him, Leo. I promise you that."

When the ambulance doors swung open at the hospital loading dock, Helen was waiting anxiously in the chilly night air. The moment she saw Leo step out, she broke into a run, dropping to her knees and pulling both boys into a fierce, tearful embrace.

"Thank God," Helen sobbed into Leo’s messy light brown hair. "I heard the panic alarms go off. I was so afraid they hurt you."

"They tried to, but Detective Ramos came just in time," Leo said, leaning into her warm embrace for the first time all night.

As Lily was loaded smoothly into the back of the ambulance, Detective Ramos pulled Helen aside for a quiet, intense conversation. Leo watched them from the edge of the pavement, exhausted down to his bones.

Suddenly, a bright pair of high-beam headlights swept across the ambulance bay. A rusted black sedan pulled up sharply beside the curb, and a man in a tattered gray coat stumbled out from the passenger side, coughing violently into a bloodstained handkerchief.
