Chapter 12 - The Race Through the Lower Gates

The heavy steel security gate ground downward with a metallic screech, showering sparks onto the pavement as it rapidly closed the gap between the concrete pillars. The black SUV lurched backward, its shredded tires smoking against the asphalt as Director Vance tried frantically to reverse away from the gunfire, realizing his hired thugs had failed.
"Climb inside! Move, move, move!" Detective Ramos shouted, covering the rear of the ambulance as David scooped Leo up and hoisted him into the back beside Lily.
Helen scrambled in after them just as the steel gate slammed into the pavement with a deafening crash, completely sealing off the courtyard from the street outside and cutting off the SUV's escape route entirely.
Inside the dimly lit back of the ambulance, the heart monitors beeped with a steady, reassuring rhythm as Lily’s color slowly began to return under the influence of the intravenous antibiotics. She opened her eyes fully, looking up at her father and brother with a weak, comforting smile.
"Are we going home, Daddy?" Lily whispered softly, her small hand reaching out to squeeze David’s scarred fingers.
David swallowed hard, blinking back the hot tears stinging his eyes as he pulled her into a gentle embrace. "Yes, baby. We're going home. We're going to be okay."
Detective Ramos climbed into the front cab of the ambulance, slamming the partition door shut and speaking rapidly into her radio to coordinate backup units at the sealed perimeter gates. Through the rear glass window, Leo watched as municipal police cruisers converged on the courtyard from the main street, their flashing red and blue lights painting the brick walls in a chaotic dance.
The officers moved swiftly, surrounding the trapped black SUV and ordering Director Vance and his remaining men out with their hands raised. Vance stepped out of the vehicle slowly, his expensive suit rumpled, his face a mask of bitter defeat as the heavy steel cuffs were clicked into place around his wrists.
Leo exhaled a long, shaky breath he felt like he had been holding for days. He reached into his blue hoodie pocket and pulled out the worn leather journal, placing it carefully into his father’s hands.
"We got it, Dad," Leo said quietly. "They didn't get the book."
David looked down at his son, his expression softening with immense pride and overwhelming sorrow. "You saved us, Leo. Both of you. You carried the truth when I wasn't strong enough to hold it."
Suddenly, the radio mounted on the dashboard of the ambulance crackled to life, breaking the quiet relief inside the vehicle with a harsh, unexpected message from dispatch.

"Unit Four, be advised," the dispatcher's voice droned through the static. "We have an urgent notification from the federal prosecutor's office. Director Vance's arrest warrant has just been unexpectedly rescinded by a federal judge due to a high-level jurisdiction override."
