Chapter 14 - Confrontation at the Exit

The heavy steel door of the ambulance swung wide open, flooding the interior with the harsh, glaring white light of the federal transport vans. A tall, imposing federal agent stood on the pavement, his expression cold and devoid of any human warmth as he rested his hand casually on the holster of his sidearm.
"Dr. David Vance, and children," the agent said smoothly, his voice carrying an icy authority that demanded absolute obedience. "You are in possession of classified municipal property under federal seal. Step down from the vehicle immediately."
Detective Ramos instantly stepped into the doorway, blocking the agent's path with her badge held high. "Agent Miller, this vehicle is under local police jurisdiction. You have no authority to commandeer a municipal medical transport without a signed local warrant."
The federal agent didn't even blink. He pulled a folded paper from his breast pocket and tapped it with a gloved finger. "Judge Sterling signed a direct jurisdictional override three minutes ago. All local warrants are null and void. Hand over the children and the journal, Detective, or face immediate charges of obstruction of justice."
David exchanged a desperate, fleeting glance with Helen and Detective Ramos. He knew that once they stepped down from the ambulance, the ledger would be confiscated, the truth would be buried forever, and he and his children would likely vanish into the legal machinery of a corrupt system.
"Dad, I'm scared," Lily whispered from the stretcher, her dark eyes wide with terror as she clutched Leo's arm.
Leo stood up straight, shielding his sister with his small body. He looked past the federal agent toward the open courtyard where Director Vance stood by the black transport van, watching them with a smug, triumphant smirk on his face.
"You're not taking us anywhere," Leo shouted bravely, his voice echoing across the concrete bay. "Everyone knows what you did!"
The federal agent frowned, taking a menacing step closer to the ambulance threshold. "Listen to me, boy—"
Before the agent could finish his sentence, Helen lunged forward with a canister of pressurized medical oxygen, releasing the valve and sending a massive, blinding cloud of white mist hissing directly into the agent's face.
"Run!" Helen screamed at the top of her lungs.
David didn't hesitate for a single second. He grabbed Lily’s stretcher, pushing it hard through the blinding cloud of oxygen mist out the opposite side of the ambulance where the dark, open mouth of the steam tunnel service entrance waited in the shadows.
"This way! Follow the pipe lines!" David yelled, leading Leo and the rolling stretcher down the concrete ramp into the damp, echoing darkness beneath the hospital.

Shouts echoed behind them as federal agents scrambled through the mist, but the heavy iron grating of the steam tunnel slammed shut behind David, and with a quick turn of a rusty padlock, they were swallowed safely by the shadows.
