Chapter 9 - Locked Inside the Fortress

The heavy thud of the massive iron doors slamming shut echoed like a gunshot through the vaulted foyer. The automated deadbolts engaged with a series of loud, mechanical clicks, sealing Julian and Clara inside the sprawling mansion while Arthur Vance wailed in sheer terror on the floor. Julian rushed forward, throwing his entire weight against the reinforced oak, but the doors didn't even budge. The smart-home system had been completely overridden, locking down every exit, window shutter, and steel security grate across the entire estate.

"The override codes have been wiped," Julian muttered, his fingers flying across the sleek digital keypad mounted beside the door, only to be met with a harsh, flashing red error screen. He turned back, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter with razor-sharp intensity. "We're completely sealed in."

Clara stood frozen near the bottom of the staircase, her breath forming small clouds in the sudden, unnatural chill sweeping through the foyer. The climate control system had shut down, replaced by a drafty, freezing wind whistling through the ventilation shafts.

"Who did this?" Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly as she hugged her cashmere shawl tighter. "If Victoria is arrested and Arthur is broken, who has administrative access to override the entire mansion's architecture?"

From the floor, Arthur let out a choked, hysterical laugh that quickly dissolved into a coughing fit.

"The founder," Arthur whispered, his voice hoarse and broken as he stared blankly up at the towering oil painting of his great-grandfather hanging above the grand fireplace. "The original trust agreement... it contains a dead-man's switch. If the Vance name ever lost controlling interest, the entire estate goes into permanent lockdown and self-destructs its financial records within the hour."

Julian’s eyes snapped toward the massive portrait. He walked over to the grand fireplace, ignoring Arthur entirely, and stared up at the stern, painted face of patriarch Henry Vance. Behind the heavy gilded frame, a faint, rhythmic clicking sound could be heard, distinct from the ventilation shafts. It wasn't a self-destruct mechanism for the building—it was a secure, offline terminal actively printing physical documents.

"It's not a lockdown to destroy records, Arthur," Julian said coldly, his voice laced with sudden realization. "It's a vault release."

Julian reached out, grabbing the heavy gilded frame of the portrait and lifting it off the reinforced wall with effortless strength. Behind the painting sat a flush-mounted steel safe built directly into the brickwork, its digital dial spinning automatically as a sequence of numbers downloaded from an external, satellite-linked terminal.

Clara walked over slowly, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Julian as the heavy steel door of the safe swung open with a long, echoing creak. Inside sat a single, heavy leather-bound ledger resting upon a velvet pillow, glowing faintly under the light of an internal ultraviolet lamp.

"What is that?" Clara whispered, leaning in closer.

Julian reached inside, his fingers gently brushing against the ancient leather. He pulled the ledger out, flipping open the heavy cover to reveal pages filled with handwritten entries dating back decades—entries that detailed not just shipping routes and corporate assets, but a massive, hidden conspiracy involving the city’s highest-ranking political figures.

Before Julian could read the first line, the mansion’s interior lights flickered violently twice and then died completely, plunging the entire grand foyer into pitch-black darkness.
