Chapter 11 - The Ghost of the Vance Empire

The violet light from the open safe illuminated the newcomer's face, stripping away years of rumors and carefully guarded disappearances. It was Richard Vance—the legendary patriarch of the family, long believed to have died in a mysterious plane crash over the Atlantic ten years ago. He looked older, his hair completely silver and his face lined with deep, unforgiving wrinkles, but the terrifying intensity in his dark eyes remained entirely unchanged. He wasn't frail; he stood tall, leaning slightly on an ivory-handled cane, looking down at his pathetic grandson crumpled on the floor with utter contempt.
Arthur stared up from the marble in absolute, paralyzed shock, his jaw slack and his eyes wide as saucers.
"Grandfather?" Arthur whispered, the word sounding like a broken prayer. "You... you're dead. The memorial... the estate settled the probate court years ago..."
Richard let out another dry, rasping chuckle, tapping his ivory cane sharply against the floor.
"Death is a very convenient tool when you need to watch your greedy relatives tear each other apart from the safety of the balcony, Arthur," Richard said, his voice smooth, gravelly, and dripping with absolute cruelty. He slowly shifted his gaze from his weeping grandson to Julian and Clara, his eyes lingering on the heavy leather ledger tucked inside Julian’s coat. "And it appears you brought quite the audience to my little resurrection, Julian."
Julian did not flinch. He stood his ground, his hand remaining firmly inside his pocket, his posture radiating a dangerous, coiled readiness.
"We knew someone was orchestrating the systemic destruction of the shipping lanes, Richard," Julian stated evenly, his voice cutting through the gothic chill of the room. "We just didn't expect the architect of the fraud to be hiding behind a fabricated tombstone."
Richard smiled—a thin, razor-sharp expression that reached nowhere near his dead eyes.
"Fraud? No, Julian. It's called evolution," Richard replied, taking a slow, deliberate step forward into the ultraviolet light. "Companies stagnate when they rely on honest capital. To build a true empire that controls the municipal grid, you have to burn the weak branches—starting with an incompetent grandson who couldn't even keep a simple corporate merger quiet."
Clara stepped out from behind Julian’s shoulder, her fear completely evaporating, replaced by a white-hot fury that burned brighter than the ultraviolet glow. She looked directly into the eyes of the man who had ruined her family's shipping contracts years ago, destroying her father's legacy before targeting her.
"You're the one who forged my father’s signature on the bankruptcy papers ten years ago," Clara accused, her voice ringing out with crystal-clear venom in the dark foyer. "You didn't just ruin the Vance empire; you destroyed innocent lives just to pad your offshore accounts!"
Richard turned his cold, calculating gaze toward Clara for the first time, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his weathered face before he masked it with an icy smirk.
"Ah, the little accountant's daughter," Richard murmured softly, stepping even closer. "You have your father's stubborn fire, my dear. Too bad it's going to burn you to ashes tonight. Because you see..." Richard tapped his cane twice against the marble. "...the doors aren't just locked to keep people out. They're locked to ensure no witnesses leave."

From the shadows behind Richard, six armed men in tactical gear stepped silently into the foyer, their automatic weapons raised and aimed directly at Julian and Clara.
