Chapter 7 - The Family’s Darkest Secret

The marble foyer fell into an absolute, stunned silence, broken only by the rhythmic flashing of the police cruisers outside. Arthur Vance scrambled on his hands and knees away from his aunt, his eyes wide with sheer horror as he realized the brutal game Victoria had been playing all along. She hadn't just been trying to stop Julian; she had been setting up Arthur to take the absolute fall for the entire multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme, leaving her as the sole surviving heir to the shattered Vance empire.
"You... you framed me!" Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking hysterically as he pointed a trembling finger at Victoria. "You told me to siphon the funds into the offshore accounts! You said it was a tax shelter for the family trust! You planned this from the very beginning!"
Victoria’s face twisted into an ugly, venomous sneer. All her elegant poise vanished, replaced by the desperate, clawing rage of a cornered predator.
"You stupid, incompetent fool," Victoria hissed, stepping away from her nephew as if he carried a deadly plague. "You couldn't run a lemonade stand, let alone a global shipping conglomerate. I had to clean up your mess before the board voted us both into oblivion!"
Detective Miller stepped forward, his boots clicking sharply on the floor as he unclipped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. He didn't even look at Arthur; instead, his gaze locked directly onto Victoria with unyielding authority.
"Mrs. Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy," Detective Miller stated calmly, his voice ringing out clearly across the grand hallway. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Before Victoria could react, two officers moved in swiftly, grabbing her arms and forcing them behind her back. The emerald necklace she wore so proudly caught the red and blue flashing lights, turning the deep green stones into blood-red drops of shame as she was hauled backward toward the open doors.
"This isn't over!" Victoria screamed, straining against the officers, her voice echoing into the chilly night air. "You think you’ve won, Julian? The real owners of those accounts aren't even in this country! You’ll never find the offshore keys!"
The heavy oak doors swung shut, cutting off her shrill screams as the police escort descended the steps with their high-profile prisoner. Arthur remained huddled on the floor, weeping silently into his hands, completely abandoned by the family that had taught him to value power above all else.
Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, her knees suddenly feeling weak as the adrenaline began to drain from her system. Julian was right there, catching her gently by the waist before she could sway, pulling her close against his chest. He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head, his hands steady and warm against the chill of the night.
"It's over, Clara," Julian whispered softly against her hair. "You're safe now."
Clara looked up into his dark, intense eyes, finally allowing the heavy weight of the past year to melt away. But as she opened her mouth to speak, a small, blinking red light caught her eye from the inner pocket of Victoria’s discarded emerald coat lying on the floor.

She pointed a trembling finger at the coat, her breath catching in her throat once again.
